  • Why do we want to be Wealthy?

Eric raised this subject a few days ago, I thought I offer my views and may be a few more of you might want to chip in.

I want to be wealthy, but it’s not about greed or power, it’s about freedom and choice. I was bought up in the 70’s under a failing lefty Labour control freak government. I could spend the next hour stating what was wrong, but in a nut shell they were governed by unions driven by yobs.

I had the "delight" of going to Secondly school only to find that those lefty socialist types had decied to do some "Social engineering" and bussed in the nastest inn-city types you could meet. I and many of my local friends had a very hard time at the hands of these thugs.

Their dream was everyone is equal............is that true?

Could i climb into a boxing ring with Mike Tyson?
Could i out drive Arton Senna?
    Could i out think Peter S C H I F F (could anyone?)

    So, are all men equal?
Only if your God or Swith & Wesson !

So whats life about then?.......................Its about gaining or mainting an unfair advantage. We do this by gaining wealth, want a better girl friend, want a faster car, want a bigger house, want to life in a low crime area free of low life..................You need to gain wealth.

As some of you are aware, i live in a very small flat (rent free) in Southport, i work in Liverpool. I had the "pleasure" of being the subject of a rather nasty carjacking 5 years ago. I seen shootings/knifings/muggings. I be delighted to move to low crime area but home prices are just insane.

But now the Bulsh*t wealth is evaporating before our very eyes and i saved VERY hard and invested in Gold/Euro's/ Peter S C H I F F s......................My hope is that i will very soon have.....................One Hell of an unfair advantage!
    Cheers

Cause success in life is usually tied, either directly or indirectly, to the amount of money one has.

If you like toys, money is how you do it.
If you like comfort and family, money certainly helps.

Mike I think that everyone is equal under the law. A man that does not produce a product but lives off the production of others is not equal jmho.

Funny that you asked that question about money. I have been wondering lately why I want more and work as hard as i do to get it? How much is enough? I have known a few people over the years that were worth 100 to 500 million and they seemed to want to get even more money more than the average Joe wants it- whats up with that?

I like nice things, but I really don't need much to have a happy life with my family. If i ever figure that question out i will let you know - and U do the same.

Re: Why do we want to be Wealthy?

I want to be wealthy because I want to go into politics and fix some of the policies which are broken. I need wealth to do this because hoping to attain high political office is somewhat like hoping to become a professional athlete or a rock star -- the chances of success are exceedingly low. Because the chances of success are so low, I am unwilling to bet my family's financial security on quitting my day job and making a run for office. However, if I had a big cushion of wealth, then my family wouldn't need my salary to get by, and I could afford to make the attempt and fail repeatedly.

Money means security and the flexibility to do something other than make money to get by.

I value physical and emotional health far above wealth. I personally experienced that wealth does not make one's life any fuller and happier.

I want to be wealthy because then I can be a misanthropist to my heart's content and tell the world to piss off. [ perhaps a little societally maladjusted ]

You don't need much money for that. Get a small place in a mountainous area in a subtropical region, have some chickens, grow your own fruits and vegetables and you are pretty much settled. You could even get some alternative energy solar panels ;)

Rick - Maybe I should have trained as Preacher so I could save some souls from Resource Depletion, Peak Oil and Global Warming instead? I hear it's a good gig. After 20 years preaching (9.00-5.00 with some OT - no union pay though, which sucks) you get all the best perks up at the heavenly Starbucks in the Sky.

I want to have enough to pay for my kids education, work only as much as I feel like, and to heli ski once a year wherever I want. I'm talking thigh deep freshies for a week. That and a nice long trip to Africa with my wife when I call it a day.

To avoid the alternative, which is often a miserable place to be.

Re: Why do we want to be Wealthy?

                          Good points all.

To me wealth is freedom to do what you want each day. Freedom to spend your time and money doing a degree of good in the world w/o your time and energy being consumed just earning a living. Freedom from the higher risk of crime that living in some areas entails. Freedom to live on 2 acres with a great view instead of a 1/4 acre with a view of the miserable unfriendly neighbors, or their gang banging children, and getting to listen to them fight each night. Freedom from the annoyances of having to live packed in like sardines in cheap housing. Freedom from the dangers of 30 mile commutes with frenzied morons on the roads each day. And freedom from that boss who saps your soul and tries to keep you down so he won't have any competition for his job.

We have a few nice things, like 3 vehicles, a not-ostentatious but nice home on a hill with a nice inspiring view of cows and mountains, etc. But even then, some of the furniture is of the "put it together yourself" variety, and none of it is suitable for a rich man's house. I couldn't care less about that stuff. Just as long as it's comfortable.

I have never understood the worldly ambition of many people, not those who aspire to do a good job at their profession for its own sake, but those to whom wealth is a way to "show dad he was wrong" or show strangers how successful they are through pathetic wealth displays. Especially those who are total p***ks to their fellow man to squeeze out another dollar, losing their souls in the process. Ultimately, to me, gaining wealth means I don't have to deal with those types regularly and most of all I don't have to be a scumbag myself every day struggling to get by.

                            Along with brucec42's comments above...

Some of you may recognize this line of reasoning from the classic personal finance book Your Money or Your Life. But it makes sense to me (despite some outdated investment suggestions from the 70's & 80's) and has greatly affected my attitude towards money. Monetary wealth is important to me because once I can live purely off of interest revenue from accumulated wealth, I can stop working if I want. We "nine-to-fivers" exchange our remaining time on earth for a paycheck, and I have other shit to do before my time's up. So I need to generate wealth up to a point, after which I can stop paid employment and do whatever I want.

This viewpoint has less to do with the accumulation of material wealth than it does with personal freedom. There's nothing more valuable to me than my time, and I want to spend as little of it as possible working because I need to.

Re: Why do we want to be Wealthy?

I wanted to be wealthy to get the kind of advantages I saw the rich kids at college get. Most of the most wrenching social, emotional and relationship problems I went thru in college were solved by the rich kids with a gold amex card. I won't bore you with the details but I quit work as soon as I could afford to at age 37.

Wealth allows one to live well, certainly (I'm writing this from our private island in the Florida Keys) but also to do good and good and speak truth to power. I've stuck it to everyone from Disney to the local developers raping the earth. They see some asshole in tiedye and a ponytail and literally sneer when I show up to take issue with their development plans. Sheer joy is showing up at the next county planning meeting with a transcriptionist, lawyers, guns and money and seriously fuck with these entitled creeps.

Anyway, that's why I wanted to be wealthy. The sad thing is that everyone wants twice the money or income they have, no matter the amount. I know billionaires who are miserable. The best advice I ever got? Want what you have.
"The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much it is whether we provide enough for those who have little." - Franklin D. Roosevelt
