  • Bankrupt Mortgage banker kills wife and self

This may not be the first of these tragedies.

The 59-year-old mortgage banker was the executive vice president for the secondary market at the now-bankrupt Fieldstone, a once-flourishing lender based in Columbia, Md. The company went bankrupt in November, overwhelmed by the collapse of the subprime mortgage market and the general credit crunch.
As Fieldstone's third highest ranking executive, Buczynski earned $330,800 in base salary last year, according to a filing with the federal Securities and Exchange Commission. With loans of $5.5 billion, Fieldstone employed about 1,000 people as late as 2006. It now has fewer than 20 workers.

    From the article:
"Inside Walter Buczynski's car, investigators found a note saying he had jumped from the bridge, his children were safe and he killed his wife because of their personal relationship, not their dire financial situation."

Money Madness. It can literally kill you if it ever gets to 'own' you.

Re: Bankrupt Mortgage banker kills wife and self

My wife and I have a friend who is Peruvian; she was employed by a mortgage company to sell to Spanish speaking potential customers.

I don't know how ethical she personally was in doing so - but I can make 3 observations:

        1) She is not in the least bit sophisticated financially; the likelihood of her truly understanding any exotic mortgages offered is low.

        2) She is around 27 years of age, doesn't own a house, and has been jumping jobs regularly for several years. With this munificent amount of life experience, it is equally doubtful she has accumulated significant wisdom to understand the impact of resetting exotic mortgages, not to mention bubbles - real estate or otherwise

        3) At her invitation, I and my wife went to the mortgage company's Christmas party just before last Xmas. I have only seen such a collection of jingoistic, Californication-stereotypical, silicon-cyborg, peroxide blondes in select ultra-hip bars in the Y2K era (her co-workers). At least I now know where they all went!
