  • 112 Degrees, my Air Conditioner died

My A/C died. The compressor fan to be exact. I had the pleasure of calling my A/C guy and asking him to come out on a Sunday. On Father's Day.

He's the only repairman I trust. He never overcharges, never tries to upsell. Half the time he forgets to send a bill.

My company uses this guy for all our HVAC repairs in our rentals. I'm the one who processes his bills for payment so he likes me a lot. He told me that there are only two people he would have come out for today, and I'm one of them. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Or at least warm. Damn, it's 91 degrees in here!

All the parts stores are closed of course. He had a fan motor in his truck. It's the right Amps but it's too fast. He went ahead and put it in with a prayer. Said if my system likes it, it'll be fine. If it doesn't, it'll overheat and stop in about an hour.

He's been taking care of my A/C for the last five years: Annual services, freon leak, new thermostat, new capacitor, repaired some ducting under the house and replaced TWO different fan motors including today's. He never would give me a bill. Today I insisted he let me pay him. This fan alone is a $350 job, installed.

He charged me $463 for everything. And he told me if the fan quits today or at any point this summer, to call him and he'll be back out with a new one, no charge.

Some people are just good souls.

I have a backup electric heater but a backup air conditioner is a lot more complicated and expensive. The new fan is working like a champ (yay!) so I think it'll be alright going forward.
