  • Fiats finnest moment?

Sadly even with all the investment in hi tec production, the Italian government/Fiat & the USSR did a deal.
They swapped all the old tooling for the Fiat 124 to USSR in return for a large shipment of steel so Fiat could make cheap cars.

Sadly the steel sent from the CCCP was VERY poor grade & unsuitable for car production.......too late, Alfa/Lancia & Fiat had to use it......with the result of a dissolving car on your driveway.

The best thing about the Fiat is it made everyone in America forget about the Chevy Vega.
Instead of 1970s Vega carcasses littering the verges of the highways of America, as they rusted away to nothing they were replaced with abandoned early-'80s Fiats. The biblical 'from dust to dust'...

I think it was VW that sussed if you get the steel producer to galvanise the steel right off the mill so it was already 95% there at the start of production.
Then they treated the car to cover anything else. When I said goodbye to my Skoda vRS (VW BORA clone) it was 13 years old, not a spot of rust anywhere!

By the thread title, i didn't know if you meant the car or the currency!

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

This should have been Fiats big win, proven engine/gearbox....I think the 2 main worries were.
Piss poor rust protection & bad wiring......Fiat were forced to buy from local producers as was British Leyland & Ford UK.

                Crap parts = crap cars

Back in the days of my ill-spent youth (the disco era 1970s) when I drove a Datsun, a number of my friends had Triumphs and MGs. This was in rainy Vancouver. They were famous for their Lucas "Prince of Darkness" electrics refusing to start, or stay running in the damp, headlights that would randomly "self extinguish" at night, and other character building quirks.

"Why do the British drink their beer warm? Because Lucas builds refrigerators."

Yes & Ford British Leyland Vauxhall were FORCED to buy from them.
...........then the EEC came along, I remember there was a strike in UK & Ford rushed stock from Germany in.

Bosch then came to them & offered VASTY better parts at LESS cost if they dumped Lucas..........they did!

Don't get me wrong Fiat made some good stuff:_

The 2 litre T/C was a vastly better cat than the Ford Escort RS 2000
