      Re: Airline up date

Just about everybody I know is saying they won't get on an airplane until there is a cure or a vaccine.

I think a lot of people are going to re-discover Route 66 this summer...with the kids in the back of a honking big SUV. Gas (petrol) is cheap.

i don't think the $40billion allocated for airline bailouts has been disbursed yet. any bets on when they're back looking for more? i still think they should all go through chapter 11 and the c-suites cleaned out. same for boeing, except for the new ceo maybe- but wasn't he on the board that approved all the buybacks? if so, get rid of him too.

I know some people willing to get on a plane -- we might even consider it ourselves later this year. Where I'm hearing consensus is no one is willing to do international.

I'm hearing exactly the opposite. Nobody wants to fly short haul; they would rather drive.

                Re: Airline up date

Hello my itulip friends. Charlie's update ...
I use to work for the airlines as a contractor. Was sacked on 3/20.
On my last day I pulled load factor as of March for April departures. It was 24%.
From my friends that remain they have been asked to "find" 20 days to take off during the summer with no pay.
A package as been created for employees to leave the airline voluntarily.
Forced layoffs of employees will begin in September.
I don't see air travel recovering until Christmas and that would also be if virus numbers were way down.

Hiya, charliebrown. It's good to hear from you.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm just so sorry you got sacked!

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Ah. Let me elaborate. We live on the US East Coast (DC suburbs)

Would we fly to NYC (no, we'd drive)
Would we fly to Phoenix or New Orleans (possibly)
Would we fly to Europe, South America [my wife speaks fluent Spanish] or even Canada (no)

Too much risk (financial [potential medical costs], time [quarantine] and obviously health) if something happens. Given health care costs in the US if you are not insured, I imagine foreign tourists will avoid the US as well.
