  • The Bane of my life

Everything was just great in the 80's to late 90's...........if you bought a powerful car you had BIG fuel bills to go with it. Then the Germans came up with the TURBO Diesel!

The means some arsehole can for Welfare money get himself a old BMW/MERC/AUDI/VW 2 litre TDI & be a pain in the ass to everyone they meet on the road........and the running costs?................well just fill it with "RED" diesel (Tax free) & be an Prick on the cheap.

GRETA is an expert on turbochargers too? Talented teenager.

Diesel engines; German engineering at its finest.

Even EJ had a diesel Bimmer iirc (maybe still does?).

And let's remember Mike, almost every European government had incentives to push people to purchase small displacement, high output diesel cars instead of petrol cars, in an effort to meet national fuel economy targets. At the peak of the diesel car boom European refiners had to export large amounts of petrol (motor gasoline) to the USA and elsewhere as local market demand fell while diesel consumption rose.

My hope is for an "EV reset"
A performance EV will cost the car producer far more to produce that an ECO EV
      https://uk.motor1.com/news/423624/pe...pert-unveiled/

      0-60 13 secs (more with a load)
      Top Speed 81 mph

Bloomberg reports that Tesla are going to use Lituim Iron Phospte (forgive the spelling/I been drinking) for China based model 3 production. Its a lot cheaper & last longer but..........25-30% less energy dense .......so you need to carry more weight of battery. I guess that what Elon will now do seeing he needs to show some profit is take the model 3 & build I cut price eco version....smaller (single) motor 225 mile range LIP battery.....reduced performance......sort of BMW 316 rather than a M3 or 325i

The "return-to-base" application is the one that has always made most sense for alternate fuel vehicles, whether CNG, LNG, propane conversions or electric. Transit buses, parcel delivery, waste/garbage collection, taxi services; they all have highly predictable routes and distances, and by always returning to the starting point (yard) it solves the refuelling facility problem.

I suspect the range limits of privately owned EVs will be less of an issue in the more densely populated, shorter distances of Europe than the USA or Canada. And parts of the latter two also have the cold climate in winter problem that disadvantages EVs.

Agreed, range & temp are major problems in US/Canada......

Back in the 90's I had:-

WEight just over a ton (1024 kgs) 130 bhp.....I had a few mods that made it to 135 ish, brakes ok ish but not as good as the R5 GT Turbo. Loved the Recaro "Wing-back" seats. On my fav road I encounter "Plebs" with 75-90 bhp & a much more weight.

I had very little trouble over taking.

12 years later I ran a Skoda vRS (Golf GTI) with a 1.8 Turbo 4 cyinder 20 valve engine, making 205 ish Bhp.
It would over take a 2 litre TDI but boy they could make it differacult for me.

Some years ago I watched how the World was flooded with Lease hire assholes with Audi S3/BMW's etc & I began to think what would I have to do to "counter" the threat.
Having thought I conclude that it was becoming too Bloody dangerous as I was facing some very fast cars with so truly crap drivers ......there for I did what Mao did .....I went on a "Long March".

I kept my power dry & I drawn the conclude that the answer is not me going quicker, its them going slower........back to the future. 1985 levels of performance!

          Mike

For a 1st real stab at an Eletro-GTI the Mini is impressive.

Short narrow slow ish circuit & well above sea level.....never the less

Long way to go but I think we see MAJOR battery tec improvments over the next 5-10 years..........

Have you seen the engine in the BMW i3 Rex? It is very similar to the original beetle engine. It comes from a motor scooter:

What the Hell is wrong with you? A few posts ago you call Mega a racist, preening around like some paragon of virtue. And now you want chat it up with him like nothing happened. How about an apology?

Ah! Mr. Woodsman. Always a pleasure to hear from you. I think that Mega knows very well that he is a racist, sexist, jew hater. I don't feel the need to prove this to you or anyone. I see him kind of as comic relief. More over I don't think he cares one way or the other what I think of him. I have known Mega for ten years, a full decade. I think that he is a big boy and can stand a little gentle poke from time to time. What he thinks of me or what I think of him is not your concern.

I like Mega. He is a smart guy who happens to hold some ideas that I disagree with. How about this: Mega has an open invitation to visit me any time he likes in the south of France.

I'm putting your words of wisdom in my Quotes file. You remind me of Katherine Hepburn. She said: "I don't care what anybody says about me, as long as it isn't true."

I'm trying not to feed this thing energy but if you're feeling at all blue, Mike, say the word and his virtual kneecaps are history.
