The Honda e and the Fiat are "cute". Which is better than the deliberately weird looks most hybrid and electric car manufacturers have tried so far (Tesla being the notable exception with its sedans). Probably appeal to the youngsters who live in tiny concrete condo boxes in the sky in the city centres.

But at least in Canada the aftermath of the virus is almost certainly going to:

    • leave significant portions of the population materially less well off than before, which will influence both discretionary expenditures (motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATVs...) and large purchases (mid-life crisis sports cars?),
    • create structurally higher unemployment for years to come, especially for low-skill workers, compared to the record low rate going into this catastrophe,
    • force a lot of people into earlier than planned retirement with discounted pension payments and benefits thus further reducing consumption,
    • accelerate the previously well established trend of income compression for those still working,
    • reduce disposable income as taxes are raised to pay for the enormous deficit financing now underway as a result of shutting down the economy,
    • may cause people to exit the high cost, high-rise city cores and seek less expensive housing with a social-distancing lawn in the 'burbs (especially if their now lower paying job allows work-from-home),
    • lower the cost of plentiful used ICE vehicles & the cost of the gasoline they use for the next while,
    • limit the ability of indebted governments to subsidize EV purchases,
    • limit the ability of indebted governments to subsidize the installation of solar, wind and other "renewable" energy projects...thus maintaining dependency on natural gas and coal fossil fuel generation to re-charge the few EVs out there.

In short, more Canadians are going to be attending to the issues of paying off their debts (mortgages, HELOCs, credit cards) and putting Corn Flakes on the table, instead of worrying about saving the planet by purchasing an expensive EV.

That won't happen in Canada. Because...
        1. There is no EV manufacturing in Canada,
        2. There is a significant ICE vehicle assembly industry in Canada,
        3. There is also a large ICE vehicle parts manufacturing industry in Canada,
        4. Both 2 & 3 are concentrated in the vote-rich Province of Ontario, with some parts manufacturing in Quebec - both Provinces essential for Liberal government re-election prospects,
        5. The Feds are probably going to "rescue" the aforementioned ICE manufacturers (GM, Chrysler, Ford, maybe Honda and Toyota as well) as part of restarting the economy.

Tough to subsidize the manufacture of something at the same time as raising taxes on buyers. Ain't gonna happen.

What they are doing is raising carbon taxes on fuel, and running a grand, popular income re-distribution system using the proceeds. It's the perfect political joke; sprinkle money on favoured voters while everyone in the nation can feel good about saving the planet. The Federal carbon tax went up 50% on April 1. With fuel prices in the toilet that hasn't been much of a problem. In other words, don't tax buying the vehicle, but instead tax using the vehicle, LOL.

Your going to find they don't care...........they on a different level to us......I still recall with horror your "leader" getting off the plane to visit India.
He & his family decked out in India dress.......the India government look very "Unimpressed" with him.

Give that I am laid up I taken the time to watch lectures on WW2, looking at the mind set of Nazi Germany.....& Impearl Japan (they lost if you recall). Both fell victum of believing their own propaganda.....that they could beat certain defeat ......I mean Japan attacking America!
