High power EV for Mega, low power for the indebted unwashed

Still haven't seen an EV that's practicle over the long distances we routinely travel out here. Fine for city use but I couldn't commute in a plug-in only vehicle here. Busses and trains are equally useless for a metropolitan area as spread out as Phoenix.

I don't want this Lotus, but its going in the right direction.

Shiny, what sort of range would you require?

Hybrid electrics run on pure battery for only a few miles before switching to gasoline. When they're running on gasoline they're hardly any more fuel efficient than a gas-only vehicle. Maybe that's fine for people who drive 5 miles to work but it's no good for me.

My commute is 47 miles each way with no recharge plug available at work. That doesn't count side trips. For me to buy a plug in only vehicle, I want the same range I get between fuel fillups now (almost 400 miles), and I want the recharge to take no longer than filling up with gas. Because if I get home with a battery that's almost drained, what do I do if something urgent comes up and I can't use the car because it's still recharging? I'm trapped at home with a useless car...

If I drive 1000 miles to Texas I do NOT want to have to sit for hours and hours every time the battery needs recharging. And I don't want a battery that bursts into flames on a whim, taking my house down with it.

Off to work now, 47 miles...

Ah, Ok very good points....I do 42 miles each way to work so for now an EV wouldn't work.....but if they got solid State then it might change very quickly.

A typical EV will do 200mi or more. You are thinking of the EVs from about 5 years ago.

They are very heavy. Most people don't seem to mind. I think the electric bicycle is a better solution for most people. I'm also getting interested in the hybrid which is an almost forgotten segment even though all the car manufacturers are making them now. The new environmental regulations will require most new cars to have some electric range soon. The newest hybrids combine a 100km electric range with a decent gasoline engine. I'm thinking of getting the BMW i3 Rex which in the US has a 246km electric range with a small gasoline engine. This car is not for sale in France which I find irritating. I will keep looking. Things are improving fast.

What's the "save the planet" impact of manufacturing a new EV with a new battery versus driving a 12-year old car ICE car, and replacing it someday with another used car? My used Crown Vics don't require oil and raw materials to build them. Nor do they require strip mining to make the batteries, either.

I made the mistake in 2011 of buying a new, fuel-efficient car to save on gasoline. Compared to the cost of insuring my "recycled" Crown Vics, the high cost of insuring that "new" little car more than offset any savings from fuel economy. It's just not worth it.

Up until recently the argument for electric was mostly emotional. Now the argument is economic and functional. Electric cars are just a better value.

I am looking at an electric because I think that (a) the cost of fuel and maintenance will be cheaper in the long run and (b) we will soon have no choice. Gas stations will be shut down or made inaccessible to ordinary people.

If it makes any difference, my next car will probably be a used electric car. I understand the bottom is dropping out of the market.

I find the French second hand car market very unappealing. Am currently looking for a second hand Honda Civic 8th generation hatchback ('the spaceship') with petrol engine and sub 100K total kilometrage. Prices are easily double for the equivalent found in the UK or Germany...
The French don't seem to swap cars much or flash them to show their wealth (and else they wouldn't buy so many shoddy French built cars), so they stick with one for a long time. I guess that speaks in their favour.

Not sure my next car will be EV but it will be Hybrid.
I suspect a 48 v mild Hybrid from Ford............the one after that?..........almost certain to be EV.

I think I see the EV as history repeating its self, I grew up Ford was king & they were kind enough to offer us:-

                          Live Axle (solid rear axle)
                          Leaf springs
                          Pushrod engines
                          High profile low grip tyres.

                          Then the 80's arrived:-
                          IRS
                          16 valve engines
                          4wd
                          fuel injection
                          TURBO'S

What I am hopeful for is a re-run, new high tec EV Battery chemistry (Solid state).
Hopefully a lot of expensive heavy metals will be not used, GM new battery will use 70% less Cobolt

A used EV might make financial sense. Buying when the bottom drops out of a market is a smart move. How much does it cost to replace a used battery?

I remember in the early 1980's, Computer firms kept leap frogging each other, I suspect the same will happen here.

I was on a tour of a phone exchange in the 1980's.......& was shown where the cables come into the exchange.....I noticed a number of underground trunking pipes with no cables. The bloke told me "Yes, they were ment for new phone line demand, but we never use them now......because we moved from copper wire to fibre optic ".

I expect the VW "Battery box" will have less & less battery in it over time.
