Flu has a vaccine, this does not please stop equating the two. The R0 is between 2 -3. hospitals would have been swamped so the CAFR would gone higher one ICU units were full.Originally posted by Mega View Post

We would have got more deaths and probably rioting in urban centres.
I don't think our economies are trashed, still a lot of people working and governments are willing to spend.Comment

Ok, its a breakout, Flu like Epidemic............we had those before.
35,000 people die EVERY year in the UK, that's 673 a week (avg) ........& its not linear either, peeks at some times of the year.
What I like to see is numbers for the last 30 years or so......& see if we faced an outbreak like this before?
Yes, I know its "New" but its clearly not BLACK DEATH .........yes there might be a case for some limted actions to be taken.......at risk groups to shelter in place & care to be taken.......how many will die because of the action now being taken?
They NOT rioting in Sweden as yet.

You are missing the point. COVID-19 is in ADDITION to the regular flu and all of the cancers and car accidents and so forth. It is causing the health care machinery to malfunction. All of the beds in the hospitals are going to COVID-19 patients because it makes them very very sick for a long long time. A bed in the ICU in the US for a month or so will run you a million USD. Some of the patients from the Diamond Princess cruise ship are still in ICU after 50 days. About half of those patients require a ventilator. A ventilator requires five or more skilled workers and round the clock monitoring. It doesn't matter if it "only" kills a half a million people ( according to the CDC this is about typical for a bad flu season). Do I need to mention that you have an 80% chance of never waking up after they shove that tube down your throat?Originally posted by Mega View Post

In Wuhan china the hospitals didn't have enough test kits so they adopted a work around for testing if a patient had COVID-19. They x-rayed the lungs and if both lungs had the "ground glass" opacity and the patient had elevated blood counts then they said it was likely that he had the disease. Not as good as a real test but better than "Use your best judgment".Originally posted by Mega View Post
