Not just an idiot he is a liability, the civil service bought the UK time with their isolate and trace, his government went for the risky play of getting herd immunity when schools should have been closed. Now he chickens out on his own policy by going for a private ICU for symptoms that many calling 111 (NHS helpline) would be told to cover up and stay at home.

Having been able to see what was going on from a distance I can see their thought process.
They bought into China's lies because they wanted to belive .........they F**ked up.

In any case they need to kill free movement of air travel, which is almost as bad so they rolled the dice.......

Thing is though, its a long game & remember this will not stop you getting the virus, simply delay it long enough to ensure there is (a hope of) ICU bed for you.

I watch Sweden, if they do no worst than other nations (per capita) .....there will be HELL to pay!

How could you tell? I think that all of the statistics I am seeing are either completely fabricated or just plain poorly collected. I highlighted that Italian study the other day. They are under-counting deaths by a factor of at least four.

Seems a little early to pass judgement on the alternative approaches different governments have taken...other than perhaps the initial inclinations and actions (or lack thereof) of the Chinese originators of this global catastrophe.

I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunity to look back and see which government policies proved the most prescient and effective to deal with the very difficult choices every nation has been faced with as this thing transformed into a pandemic. One of the biggest issues our leaders have to deal with these days is "everybody" is a friggin' "expert", and our always-on, near-instant communications technology gives them all a platform. The cacaphony around this virus is deafening. And it potentially prevents decisive action when it is badly needed. Our Canadian government lacked the courage to shut down air travel from China, even after it legislated the closure of businesses and the self-imposed house arrest of its citizens.

Virtually every death from COVID-19 is a tragedy for the families involved. But then virtually every death from any cause is a tragedy for the families involved.

As of April 9 @ 1600 GMT the cumulative total of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide is 1,549,544 with a cumulative total of 91,636 deaths attributed to it, and 344,684 people that have recovered from the infection.

The WHO (the UN organization, not the rock band) states that the top four leading causes of death worldwide are, in order, heart disease, stroke, lower respiratory infection and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. I wonder how many fatalities of elderly with the latter two, that might have led to an eventual fatality, will be attributed to complications from COVID-19. Challenging to manage the statistics.

I also note the apocalyptic forecasts out there have, so far, not come to pass in most jurisdictions. Whether that is because it is too soon to tell (the charts all seem to be in the "going vertical" stage), or because shutting down huge swaths of the global economy to enforce social distancing has proved effective (or some of both?), remains to be determined.

Kind, tolerant, accepting, and loving liberals and lefties across Britain and the United States breathe a quiet sigh of disappointment upon hearing news of the Prime Minister's unexpected recovery.
