Re: Cars, the next 15 years

The younger folks just don't find cars interesting. It's certainly true for my millennial children and their friends.
Old dinosaurs like you and I are fading away, only a small cadre of enthusiasts will remain who give two figs about styling or power or handling.
The private automobile will become like a clothes dryer - something you might need to buy but would never talk about or admire.

I think the problem is this, my 140 bhp eco car would have been a Hot Hatch back in the 80's

Cars were piss poor slow sheds, but over the years they got faster & faster..............in the 90's you need a top supercar to get to 60 under 5 secs.......now a VW Golf will do it!

Law coming down HARD on speeding .............I feel OLD

When I was young getting a driver's licence was considered an expression of freedom...no longer having to depend on parents for mobility (once you talked them into giving you the car keys, LOL).

I wonder today if what you describe above is just one more example of the relentless commoditization of everything around us.

Commoditization is the ultimate tangible expression of financialization.

freedom now is a smartphone. a kid's first smartphone = a big deal. much less need for physical mobility, and for that reason transportation is just the means to an end, not an end in itself. i don't think of that transition as a result of financialization. [i blame financialization for a LOT, just not for that.]
