    Re: Have we misjuded Tesla

Why would you want a battery in your house?

    1. It's huge.
    2. It's expensive.
    3. If you have solar you can just sell the production back to the grid anyways in most states, you don't need to store it.
    4. Generators already exist, and are much cheaper, and won't have a big carbon impact if only used in emergencies/outages.
    5. Electric companies generally won't pay for you to dump your energy load at high price times, even in states with time of use pricing, and even if many eventually do, it probably won't pay for the investment.

I get why people might want solar. I simply can't fathom why anyone would want a battery, except to maybe show it off to their country club techie friends or something.

For storing excess solar-generated electricity during the day to use in the evenings? I guess for people who are well-off enough and/or determined enough, they could install enough capacity and storage to essentially be independent of the grid?

Thing is most systems are wired to sell it back, and most tou pricing schemes actually peak midday in the summer not at night.

If you're off grid, cool, but you're probably on an island or something and have DC appliances. That's a fine use, but more niche than mass market.

Nice article jk. I remain convinced that Tesla motors is doomed. It's very hard to stay in the auto manufacturing business and even harder to enter that business. It's darn impressive that Musk has managed to keep it all going for 15 years now, and put about 300,000 cars on the road. I wonder if Tesla might survive as some sort of tier 1 supplier to the EV market, building some components for other companies? As the inevitable closure approaches for Tesla as a car builder, there might be an investment opportunity just after the bankruptcy if one believes Tesla could reorganize into a supplier, or if the remaining physical plant and equipment may be bought by another firm. Perhaps Volvo or Honda, in a stock swap that might pay off for those bold enough to buy at the bottom.
