Are you Irish Mike? Something between 50% and 75% ( not an exaggeration ) of the population of Liverpool are Irish. Have you forgotten about the Troubles? You know Mike, this ends with a war. But this time the war will have England on one side and the EU on the other. In other words Mike; me a French citizen shooting at you an English citizen. Bang Bang! You're dead!

I'd just be happy if it doesn't immediately end in more troubles. It's not Britain that could end up divided up in 2 with a hard land border at the end of this mess, but the island next to it. The American press is shit at talking about that angle too. Lots of folks who travel in and out of the ROI for work every day right now would be walled off on one side or the other if a hard border goes up between the EU (Ireland) and the UK (Northern Ireland). It's a violation of the Good Friday Agreement. But when has some silly thing like that ever stopped them? May's crappy showing in the last snap election and her subsequent coalition with the DUP makes things all the worse.

The Northern Ireland minister just quit last night. Shambolic.

You're not meant to like it. But think of it from the other side: Didn't fight off 800 years of limey subjugation just to have no input if limeys take a vote to build a big wall across your island. It's a catch-22 and May's trying to thread the needle, DUP on one side, Brussels on the other. If I were down at the Turf Accountants, I'd wager she gets squeezed between and doesn't remain PM for long. But what do I know? I'm just a dumb Yankee papist with inferior celtic genes, after all.

They didn't lie to you. Every bit of this was obvious from the get go.

The EU was set up as a peace project. The Northern Irish border with The Republic of Ireland is the biggest and most visible product of that peace process. YOU are the one trying to tear up that peace treaty. The Irish are buying guns right now because of YOU. Then you have the balls to turn around and claim that the EU is threatening you.

The border with Northen Ireland is a decoy, that can be worked around with honest brokers.......but she been running interfeance & she must go.

I can totally see why people would want to leave the EU. But my friends & family in the ROI seem to think it's more than a decoy and more than just about what Brits want. So we'll see. Will be dispatching brother to visit cousins in Leitrim in a couple of weeks and get a feel on the ground in farm/border county then. Far as I'm concerned, she dug this hole for herself with the snap election and the coalition with the DUP. Can't say nobody warned her.

I honestly think we can work the issune of the Border out, its not going to be easy but nor was the peace process.
I think those whom want no change (Remainers) have tried to use this as a way of stopping the process.......once these people are removed from the process & all sides see a real need to get down to work i hope we can progress.

I think if it was just the Tories without the DUP, it'd be easy. A few Conservatives would grumble, but you just make the customs checks around the island of Britain and let NI operate under EU rules. They voted remain anyways. But having to keep them on board with a confidence and supply agreement really muddles things. And the fact the Brexit vote came after the Scottish independence vote muddles things for them too.

I mean, as a Yank, I have no real skin in the game. But it seems like the whole thing's really straining half the constituent parts of the UK while the government waffles back and forth and Tories snipe at each other, meanwhile the EU in contrast seems to be standing in very organized solidarity behind the Republic.

I agree with most of that but the EU = Germany + france.....Germany wants to rule Europe, they tried twice via Tanks............
Other nations are starting to wake up to this, but because they part of the "Euro" they find it very hard to leave, indeed i suspect the "EU" will make an example out of UK

The Irish have been the hardest hit by the financial crisis and they have one of the highest debt burdens in the world, but despite this they are solidly behind the European project. Nobody in Ireland talks about Ireland leaving the EU. They understand intuitively that they have much more to lose with "Irexit" than they would possibly gain. I listen to this podcast regularly about this:
                              https://theirishpassport.com/
EU policies have resulted in rampant homelessness and mass immiseration. The EU is an anti-democratic institution with much to dislike about it. The fact is though that the Irish have opted for reform rather than withdrawal and you whining about being made an example of after pushing the Brexit button yourself is just too rich.

The problem you have with The Four Freedoms is that "darkies" might move in next door. You like having access to the EU markets, but not those dark skinned people. I hope they throw the book at you.
