  • Self-driving car threatens prime real estate market?

This 30-year-old commutes 4 hours, and 140 miles, every day so he doesn't have to pay $4,500-a-month San Francisco rent
    https://www.cnbc.com/2018/08/20/pr-rep-commutes-4-hours-every-day-to-avoid-45000-dollar-san-francisco-rent.html

Just wondering if the car can really drive by itself, wouldn't it be possible to sleep all the way?

    An example routine:

4:30am Wake up, shave, brush teeth, etc.
5:00am Enter car, enter destination and enable self-driving mode.
    5:10am Doze off (Zzzzzz....)
    7:30am Arrive at workplace.
7:45am Take a shower, change into work attire, eat breakfast.

Lots of implication in my opinion.

    1. Companies can hire people living further away, hence depressing wages.
    2. Cost of living falls as it is no longer necessary to pay expensive rent.
    3. Residential Real estate value in the city may be affected.
    4. Companies making self-driving cars can charge a premium.
    5. Traffic congestion may worsen as people drive further and more cars clog the roads.

His car won't drive for four hours. It'll only take 30 minutes to get to the Hyperloop station:

If you live anywhere near $4,500 rent, I bet there's trains and busses available. You can sleep on busses and trains too. 4 hours is longer than it takes to get from Boston to NYC on Amtrak.

I don't get how self-driving cars change anything to do with real estate, except for in the lives of a very narrow band of people too proud to use public transit and wealthy enough to do mega commutes and afford self-driving cars, but also poor or cheap enough to be unable to afford rent.

I take buses and trains when I was a student. It's almost impossible to sleep on metro trains as they are designed not for comfort but to pack as many people are possible.

On buses still possible to take a nap if you can get a seat by the window where you can lean your head on, but you will miss your destination if you sleep too soundly so people usually just train themselves to doze, and not really proper sleep. It will be good if there's an app that can wake you up just before you reach your station though.
