    ?
    If a broker is holding stock for you, can you request that you are given the certificate, thus you can sell the stock anywhere?

    At least in the U.S., you can request that your broker mail you a certificate for the shares in a company you have at that brokerage. This usually entails some fee; I seem to recall paying $40 or so for the one time I did such a thing many years ago. To sell the stock, though, you'll probably have to submit the certificate to another broker with whom you have an account unless you are able to find a buyer for the physical certificate.
