30s today. Maybe 50 in MA by Friday. I am impressed that some sea ice started forming along the Sound. Still the bay and anywhere closer to open ocean hasn't started freezing yet.

Interesting article of history of Narragansett Bay and it highlights how infrequent Bay freeze overs have been. Yes, article also makes point Bay is warmer than in 1932.

I am not trying to disprove GW or any observations of temperature or freezing water. But I heard a radio story recently about how road salt usage has increased the water salinity around NYC. I wonder if the salinity of Narragansett Bay may have risen over the years. (As the article states, saltier water requires a lower temperature to freeze.)

From what I understand, the bay flushes pretty much monthly, so it shouldn't have a huge cumulative effect. I mean, we have raw data rather than just pictures on level and temperature going back a'ways. So even if salinity from runoff is playing a role, mean temperature has been increasing a bit under a degree c per decade regardless. That adds up over 100 years, though. But the thing is, we have lots of 100+ year old buildings and breakwaters and coastal walls and barriers and public beaches and wharfs and piers all over New England. Our infrastructure up here is really old. So it's easy to spot the difference in old photos, or just in an old timer's memory.
