Re: North Korea can hit New York

if the target was the airport why did it detonate 12 miles away? poor accuracy? or a hit to the rear of the missile which deflected its course? the article doesn't address the 12mile discrepancy. of course, turning towards the no. korea issue, with a soft target and a nuclear warhead, a dozen miles wouldn't matter much.

According to ZH, citing NYT, the missile missed by 1 km.

I won't be surprised. After 40 years or fighting turban heads on donkeys, a facebook chat bot or iphone app is probably more technlogically advanced than a patriot missile.

Now let's talk about blockchains. This is where the money is!

Unless China cuts off oil to North Korea, triggering a power change, the showdown now looks inevitable.

Thanks touchring, I did read that article.
All it really says is that NK intends to keep working towards a real nuclear ICBM, and doesn't want to negotiate about stopping that program.
The only real risk is that the US over-reacts and get millions of people killed in North and South Korea.

There seems to be some support in the US now for the idea that any amount of death and destruction in Asia is acceptable to keep NK from owning a handful of ICBMs.
That idea is crazy. If the US acts preemptively and kills million of people out of irrational fear, the results for all involved including the US would be catastrophic.

I don't know how the Machiavellian calculus works out for this as regards Russia and China.
On the one hand, both China and Russia would love to see the U.S. do something this horrifically stupid and evil, thereby instantly become a pariah nation despised forever and never again having any leadership role in politics or trade. That's a big prize worth a very high price to both Russia and China . I don't know if they are willing to pay it to entice the US into doing this. Of course, no US administration thus far would allow themselves to be pulled into such a ridiculous ploy that would kill so many people to gain nothing and lose everything. Until now the whole concept has been so implausible and unlikely it wasn't worth serious consideration. But perhaps things have changed, and perhaps China and Russia feel it might work and the cost might be acceptable. I don't know how the Machiavellian calculus works out.

china has said that if the u.s. initiates hostilities it will enter the conflict on the side of no. korea. i'm hoping we don't test that statement.

If the USA initiates hostilities it will be difficult to argue the North Koreans (and the Iranians) weren't acting logically and rationally in pursuit of nuclear capability.

The completely unnecessary and uncalled for destruction of Iraq in 2003 put the world, and the USA on a perilous course that seems almost impossible to halt now.

I had hoped President Trump would be successful in his isolationist, "America First" inclinations, and start the inevitable process of unwinding the USA's role as "global policeman". It's one thing to deliberately de-stabilize the Middle East, a region of comparatively small, undeveloped, poorly governed, fractious and even backwards (e.g. Saudi Arabia) nations. It is quite another to try to do so in China's back yard.

The US don't need to initiate hostilities for war to happen. The embargo as it is will cause kim's internal support to collapse within a year or two.

An interesting piece on the military aspects of a conflict.

I don't think Trump is that stupid. He is playing politics by dragging China into the picture. This is a very smart and logical move as it will make Kim suspicious of China, which is already happening. And we all know what happens when Kim is suspicious - the fate of his uncle, brother and the latest General Hwang.

The relationship with Kim and China is now beyond repair so much so that a Chinese general now advocates the possibility that China may actually on the offensive side on North Korea if war really breaks out. This isn't surprising as just as the US is afraid of North Korea's nukes, China is also scared of them if not even more because of the geographic proximity. North Korean nukes will pose a greater danger to China than the US in the long run. The US is actually not afraid of North Korea using the nukes on America itself but rather North Korea selling the nukes to America’s real enemies in the Middle East.

Kim is now in big trouble because ordinary North Koreans won't want to fight China. The enemy has always been the Yankees. Kim knows this and desperately tries to hold onto power by killing his generals anytime he thinks they will start to gain enough power to threaten him. This strategy won't work for long if the North Korean elites finally realise the dead end their young leader has brought them into.

North Korea derives much of its domestic productivity and export income from Methamphetamine.

North Korean illicit activity has been disrupted as far afield as south of Australia(Pong Su incident 2004, chocker full of drugs and counterfeit currency).

Meth is a growing problem in China, and much of the problem has North Korean origins.

North Korea has been a fast growing liability for China, with or without Trump’s actions or opinions.

That seems like good news, really. Since 1948 North Korea has resembled a snarling little dog, and China has been holding the leash.

What would you think the nukes are really for? Sometimes you have to wonder if Trump is actually encouraging this?
