Re: Is Tesla a cult?
darrigg,
Let me guess that you don't believe in Santa Claus or Easter Bunny! Please don't tell me that Elon Musk won't be flying to Mars to save humanity, and you are probably one of those nut jobs who doesn't understand how the Boring Company + Hyperloop will make traffic jams obsolete. ;-)
Every great entrepreneur knows you need to think big to achieve big things.
Read about one of the most brilliant entrepreneurial finance guys ever https://news.google.com/newspapers?n...,2245703&hl=en
Yes, Newspaper men always praise guys like Musk because it sells and cynical newsmen know the people will believe anything!

Re: Is Tesla a cult?
While agree that Tesla is way overpriced, and some of his ideas look like they won't survive a tightening of credit.
Musk has some serious Engineering chops and from the interviews I have seen a very keen mind, even if he goes bust now just his OpenAI initiative will revolutionize the world.

Re: Is Tesla a cult?
I respectfully disagree. Tesla Car - NOT his idea look up AC Propulsion 1. Look up Charles Steinmetz - follow this Elon + Tesla use the same motor design as Steinmetz Motor Car Company http://lemelson.mit.edu/resources/charles-steinmetz- an AC Induction Motor- Steinmetz went public in 1920 for $100+ per share and paid an 8% dividend - sad the company was bankrupt in 1923 . What is unique about the AC Induction motor is that it doesn't use magnets in the electric motor design, and because it uses induction the motor generates huge TORQUE.
The next company to use the AC Induction motor was GE in the EV1. But, GM knows how to build multispeed motors and that transmission prevented the EV1 from having ludicrious (SP?) mode. One or two of the engineers from GM Ev1 ended up at a company called AC Propulsion. http://acpropulsion.com/
Yes, AC Propulsion builds AC Induction motors - yup TESLA did not design the Motor for the TESLA
In this Video the CEO of AC Propulsion makes the claim that he introduced Elon to the Tesla Motors founders goto 3:08 mark https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjtO-9s2JXo,
Hyperloop - old idea http://www.newstatesman.com/future-p...apitals-street
SpaceX look up Tom Mueller https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Mueller
Bio for Mueller About the Speakers
tom_muellerTom Mueller is one of the world’s foremost rocket engine designers and is responsible for building and managing an elite propulsion development group at SpaceX. His department is responsible for all propulsion development at SpaceX, including propulsion systems and engines for the launch vehicles and Dragon spacecraft. Prior to joining SpaceX as a founding employee, Tom spent 15 years at TRW, where he ran the Propulsion and Combustion Products department and was responsible for liquid rocket engine development activities.
Tom has more than 26 years of relevant experience in the aerospace industry and led development of the Merlin rocket engine, the highest-performing US-made hydrocarbon engine ever and the first American hydrocarbon booster engine made in 40 years. During his career at TRW, he was the lead engineer for development of the TR-106 650,000-lbf thrust LOX/hydrogen engine. Tom has a broad range of rocket engine design, development and testing experience, including work with all common liquid propellants and many advanced propellants, providing thrust ranging from 5 lbf to 650,000 lbf. Tom has a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from Loyola Marymount University and a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Idaho. He has received many awards, including the TRW Chairman’s Award, the company’s most prestigious award for technical achievement, and he holds several US patents in propulsion technology.

Re: Is Tesla a cult?
Nice post BK. Also very nice to see that an M.E. from excellent but not "top tier" schools leading the way....if the lesson was shared more folks would have a better time accepting that the arms race to get their kids into Ivies is unnecessary.
