There’s no “solution” to what ails that part of the world, short of another flood. Syria is a mess because it is full of Syrians. The only sane policy is to make sure it remains full of Syrians. Let them kill each other there, not in Paris or Portland. If the Russians want to build their pipeline there and pay the price for it, good for them. If the Saudis want to stop them, best of luck with it. This is not an American problem. It is their problem. Let them own it.

But this is modern American democracy. One candidate – the losing one – ran on a platform of launching this new war, while the other – the victor – repeatedly vowed to avoid it, only to launch it after being in office fewer than 100 days. What a bizarre moral universe these folks inhabit. Trump attempts to limit immigration by people from Middle East countries that incubate terrorists only to have Democrats and their media assets call him the "New Hitler." But let him incinerate people in Middle East countries with flying robot bombs, and lo the Democrats and their media assets call him "Presidential."

Recall also leading Democrats have been talking about impeachment based on the ether of Russian hacks. Only now that they have _actual impeachable offences_ on their hands - waging war without congressional approval, violation of the war powers act, and likely other charges - they instead hold hands with The Donald, sing "America the Beautiful" and praise him for at long last finding his presidential mojo.

"Leading Congressional Democrats – including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi – quickly praised Trump’s bombing while raising concerns about process. Hours before the bombing commenced, as it was known Trump was planning it, Hillary Clinton – who has been critical of Obama for years for not attacking Assad – appeared at an event and offered her categorical support for what Trump was planning:"

Winston's worst fears are seeming to emerge with this illegal bombing. I guess for some that's a sin an order of magnitude worse than Democrats and HRC supporters failing even to notice when their leadership turns on a dime and reveal themselves as utterly schizophrenic, cold blooded opportunists with no discernible center. Which until Thursday remained one of their biggest criticisms of Trump.

Truly nous sommes ufcked, either way, just like the sigline says.

Last year my "Building" was visited by high ranking person from the Home office................i was rather shocked & delighted by how honest the guy was about "things". He was rather displeased when his boss expressed delight at all the crap that was going on in the World............." It will pay for my new house" he said...........i wonder what his house will be worth if it ends up as pile of radioactive rubble?

I think in Trump's view, this just as much has to do with the China/North Korea chess game. In the longer term we'll see if he is a pragmatist and searches for a solution with Russia. But for the time being, his gaining anti-Russia street cred domestically and while simultaneously showing China, Iran and N Korea that he doesn't hesitate is an opportunity he couldn't pass up.

Takes a lot of heat off him domestically, while showing other players on the world stage that America First doesn't mean anyone can do what they want now.

I think he realizes that a truly isolationist USA is dangerous to the world and ultimately to the US itself. Pax Americana isn't going away anytime soon.

I believe Expansionary Imperialism and Isolationism both lead to the the same dangerous destination. It's a balancing act.

That was my take on it.

He had too much to gain from that act not to act.

Trump's a smart guy, he knows that anything that happens with North Korea is going to affect the Chinese more than America. North Korea is China's Ukraine and in China's backyard.

Young Kim knows that the harder the US presses, the more likely China may make the first move to remove him. This fear is the reason why the half brother was killed. China is more dangerous to Kim than the Americans.

I agree in principle, but disagree on the Ukraine analog. I'm not seeing it.

David Maxwell, a retired senior SF officer now a director at Georgetown U's Security Studies Program is worth following on Twitter:

I was at GU in January for obliquely related stuff, David Maxwell is very sharp guy.

              And he's Tweeting like crazy.

Interesting twitter link. Let's see if Kim will fall for it.
