on the other hand, darwin was 51 when he published origin of species. at this point 51, let alone 44, sound pretty young to me. happy birthday, mega.

Happy birthday, Mega Mike. I turned 44 in '85, when personal computers were rather new to me, and the internet was as far as I know just a dream. Much opportunity exists today with the internet to expand one's knowledge. To me you, compared to where I was, are in the catbird's seat--whatever that means. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catbird_seat

Mega Mike, to me you are a dilemma. For sure, if iTulip ever gives awards, you will get the one for brevity. It seems to me the way you choose to post often either represents someone who, by my standards of being moderately educated, is poorly educated as least when it comes to writing, or someone who is "boozed up" sometimes when posting, or is someone who is just sloppy when it comes to posting. If any of those are in fact applicable, in themselves they do not detract from your content, just often make it harder to wade through. Thank heavens you are given to brevity.

            Jim -

With all respect you are being just a wee bit obtuse. Mega apparently has a slight dyslexia with writing. One of my colleagues, a software engineer who is a senior programmer, has tremendous difficulty writing as well. He has a very high IQ and is a bloody good programmer. He can't spell very well, but someone sees enough value in him to pay him $75K per year, which is a middle range senior programmer's salary down here. BTW, they don't pay that kind of money unless the guy is really capable.

I've corresponded with Miker for a while privately. From the little he's told me about himself, he was born into a working class family in the UK (where class divisions are somewhat more of a "glass ceiling" than they are apparent over here), and he hauled himself up, put himself through engineering school, has a house mostly paid off, a nice bit of savings, and apart from doing a reasonably brisk business as self employed consultant contractor, if you delve under the veneer of his comments to the substance, you'll note he arrived at some surprisingly sophisticated insights about the markets much on his own, before even arriving at ITulip. I'd say the guy has quite a bit already under his belt at the ripe old age of 44.

I'd say this guy demonstrates every bit as much lively intelligence and insight here as many others. The shame of it is people on iTulip can sometimes get unimaginative and plodding enough that they give no hint of recognising the world is full of people who are quite often very gifted in some directions and less in others. I have no idea if for Mike it's a typing thing, a spelling thing, a reading thing or the fact he's got genuine difficulties with all of these skills. When I was a kid I was slightly dyslexic. I wrote everything backwards, and my father had to patiently teach me how to read and write.

I personally would loathe to live in a world where everyone is cut from the same mould. And as far as anyone suggesting Miker is some kind of Troll, or must be drunk or stupid to write this way, that my friends is a pile of steaming bullshit. If you remain unable to grasp that his attempts at humor or jollity have been good natured and well intentioned every single time, then have the decency to back off. I for one can assure you every last bit of his posts has been well meaning. Anyone who wants to give Miker a hard time come and ring my doorbell first please, and I'll be glad to roll out the welcome mat for you, in spades.

I fully understand your remark meant well Jim. It's perhaps just a bit of insight I'm offering, as to what the issue is which a few others here have commented on a bit gracelessly in the past. It's a lack of imagination, to grasp how different from oneself other people in the world can be.

              Mega,

              Happy 44th.

Unlike the geezers here, you're significantly older than I...:p

I am surprised to fine that some consider me a “Troll”……I am a man of modest education. That together with my dyslexia has hand strung me quite badly in my school days.

The school itself is now an housing estate, the teachers were a bunch of dead beat losers many of whom had recently returned to the UK from far flung out posts of the once British Empire.

They lived life high on the hog, till the natives were rude enough to ask for their country back. They were therefore rather displeased to return to Brittan in the 70’s to discover that they were not as high up the Graph vine as they had been in “the Old Country”.

I always remembered my Headmaster words” “Michael, this school is going to the mechanism for your first job!”……………How true his words were…I thought about them 3 years latter has my 1st job was demolish his School!

I come on this site & others because I am trying to inform myself about the World. My greatest mistake when growing up was not to ask enough questions. Sure in some eyes you will reveal you lack of knowage but I rather do that than just stay plain dumb.

As for my “Come on’s”……such as the Peter Schiff fan club................Its my way of shaking the tree, I got limited funds and I got to be sure JUST what I am about to jump into. Peter rocks but Peters greatest fan is Peter, I need to find out if there are any skeletons in his past.

On a personal note I like thank those whom have helped me and also EJ for providing this web site and allowing “Under class” types such as myself to post here and learn!

                  Cheers
                  Mike

Thanks, Mega Mike, I had thought about the possibility of dyslexia, but failed to mention it. Don't ever feel bad about asking questions, here's one I keep seeing some bloke write, "In English, please?" Hang in there.

Mike's taken some flack on his writing before. You express indignation that I should speak frankly here? To my mind there is no stigma whatsoever in what I observed, particularly given the context of Jim's potential conclusions ("drunk or lazy"). But maybe there is a stigma in your mind? I don't believe I have ever noticed you offer up a word on Mike's behalf before? Are you sure it's a keen concern for his sensibilities which motivates you, or might it be commingled with a wish to reprimand me for something? That would be mere personal peeve, wouldn't it?

Jim's comments inadvertently were ascribing Mike's writing to "drunkenness" or "lazyness", and you did not offer a murmur of dissent until I posted about it, yet you wish to reprimand me for my clarification? Do you think you now display more exemplary sincerity by having remained silent and exhorting me to remain silent too?

C1ue, I've disagreed with you on some points. I admire a great deal of your posts and I've been quite clear about that. What I dislike is that you never seem to be able to acknowledge any smallest issue you put forward was ever even partially wrong. That speaks of a certain brittleness of misplaced pride. This is what I respect less. Given your quite impressive intelligence, this seems to be your only flaw. It's not a big flaw, but if you addressed it, you'd be close to perfect.

Shit guys, this is getting too heavy for a birthday thread.

In keeping with this thread - again I wish the best to you, Mega.

And again, to Lukester, you'll note I said nothing derogatory, merely that it is poor practice to publish personal details of other people in a public forum.

Self posting is a choice, but there's no reason to populate spam and 'black helicopter' databases any more than necessary...;)

Seriously, just as you should never publish a physical address, email, or phone number, it is not good to place other people's significant details in a public forum.

Jim's comments, hopefully black satire but more likely just 'grumpy old man' output, were just opinions.

Jim indicated 'it occurred to him' that the issue might be dyslexia but he did not mention it, instead finding it more politic to mention 'boozed up' or 'sloppy'? What kind of flat-footed form of courtesy is it, to openly surmise someone else might be 'drunken' or 'lazy' yet at the same time hesitate to mention the word 'dyslexic' for fear of offending? "Dyslexic" certainly has no pejorative connotation among anyone with even the rudiments of an education.

If anything, gaining an engineering degree while overcoming dyslexia implies a considerable compliment to that persons will and intelligence.

Does anyone think C1ue suggesting I'm being undiplomatic represents an objective comment here while omitting any mention of what prompted it? What rubbish. Sorry to sound off Jimmygu3, but maybe someone could tell C1ue to take in the whole context before offering recommendations on courtesy, and indeed, to worry less about Mike's sensibilities - Miker can look after himself just fine.
