Hmm.. I think that's fair criticism that I conflated science and knowledge. I see science as the pursuit of knowledge. If it has some higher purpose than that, I would definitely be open to discussing that. If science is not only knowledge what else is it?

I don't think I could say it more precisely than you did above. You just tripped yourself up a bit with the last sentence. As you said, science is the pursuit of knowledge. Knowledge is an outcome, not the thing itself. It's the journey not the destination.
