The answer will be yes, so long as they have greased the proper hand.
I'm waiting for graduate business schools and executive education programs to include more seminars and short courses on enhancing political campaign finance ROI.

If you go on a Tesla Motors tours please ask to see where they build the motors (or don't or assemblethje part they get from Fukuta).

I'll certainly try to ask about the motor side of the supply chain if I can.

I thought I recalled seeing a battery energy density chart that had 25 watt/hours per KG around 1900 and now sitting around 4X that at 200 watt/hours per KG today(although I think about 1/6 ratio with Tesla at moment), with a theoretical limit of approx another 4X to 800 watt/hours per KG?

I saw another carbon fibre BMW i3 today. Good form factor cube, and I like their emphasis on low weight(biggest low hanging fruit opportunity) that other manufacturers cannot(safety requirements) or will not(customer safety perception requirements) pursue.

Our family would survive and thrive well with 1 vehicle electric only or electric with ICE range extender.

But at this stage we would only buy 2nd hand(much as we successfully did with a Japanese market Prius a good few years ago)to benefit from the considerable depreciation cost of new buyer vanity.

I saw a BMW i3 and a Nissan Leaf. If Elon Musk wants to make a cool electric in will have to end up near the BMW i3 price point of $42K - and I have to imagine that BMW is in a much better position to keep component costs down (buying in big volume). Meanwhile the Leaf is at $21K price point and isn't nearly as cool looking/luxurious.

I think the average investor/mutual fund manager uses the same metrics to value software, social media, and manufacturing companies.

You imply that purchase order financing is some kind of nefarious scam. The debt holders are in a more secure position than the equity owners. Surely you don't think all the TSLA shareholders were enticed by bribes, do you?

If Tesla is greasing hands, it's probably the ones who vote on whether to subsidize electric vehicles.

            Santa Fe,
This paper corroborates that Fukuta supplies motors to Tesla Motors.

Jeremy Grantham's latest quarterly news letter is out and he states that he is one of the 400,000 or so people who have placed $1,000 down as a pre-order.

A $1000 deposit for Mr Grantham is the equivalent of the penny most of us find in our between our Sofa cushions. ;-)

Absolutely true. In some ways, that makes Grantham's comment even more interesting. Being that he's one of the ultra-wealthy, he could have easily bought a Model S or Model X right now and not have to wait two or three years. That he chose to deposit a $1,000 reservation for a Model 3 says that he really seems to think Tesla might make it.

I have not found any in-depth discussion by Grantham about Tesla. From the little bit I have read from him about Tesla, though, I get the impression that he is rather impressed with the company. Of course, this could be due to his spending a lot of his time investing in and endowing organizations to head off what he believes will be environment catastrophe.

I strongly suspect Grantham's like/admiration for the company and its products is very different from his like for the company's stock. For a guy who has spent the past few decades of life studying bubbles, it almost unfathomable that he might think that the valuation of the company isn't insane.

I suspect Mr Grantham doesn't care or know muck detail about Tesla Motors. Perhaps Mr Grantham wanted more people to discuss his commentary and figured the TSLA hola effect to be a great method. $1,000 would buy Mr Grantham less than 5 shares of TSLA.

I think the least interesting thing in GMO's quarterly letter is the reference about Tesla. Lots of important facts-thoughts IMO.

Of the things Grantham said in the latest newsletter, his down payment for a Tesla Model 3 was the least important but I thought it was interesting/surprising. I didn't mention some of the other, more important things he said in this thread because this thread is devoted to specifically to the Model 3.

But Grantham's statement that he was wrong on mining stocks was interesting and important. It seems like iTulipers who got caught in the coal bust have shared company with Grantham. Small consolation but even a very skilled investor like Grantham got it wrong. Before Grantham published his latest newsletter, I had come to the same conclusion that he did, albeit with far less backing data: that China's Great Wall of Money has totally distorted not only its own market but also the global market for commodities.

TSLA has a 'goldman' moment ???
(ala aapl and its 'cramer' moment back a couple months ago, with most recently a 'buffet' moment)

kindy funny, aint it - that havent we heard much lately about "FAILURE OF THE REGULATORS"
as was so LOUDLY TRUMPETED oh so famously in the aftermath of The Great Meltdown...

of course back then it was the bush admin's 'regulators' that were doing the failing - BUT NOW?

'what failure' ? everything = awesome!
