Thousands of lithium ion battery cells stuffed into as small a contained space as possible.
The first concern I had with these batteries was in 2010 with my last laptop computer. I would be working on a flight from here to there and realize that the battery was getting so hot it wasn't comfortable in my lap. Apparently they've figured this out because my current Lenovo is only a bit too warm.
Then there was the 787 Dreamliner problem. After four fires caused by LI batteries the entire fleet was grounded. The solution was not to solve the LI battery issue, it was to isolate the LI battery sufficiently so its failure won't crash the plane. No root cause analysis. They don't know why the batteries caught on fire. As you can imagine, my family doesn't fly on this model.
To repost my concern, the first time a high mileage electric vehicle has a battery failure while charging in some poor fools garage while he's trying to do the right thing for global warming etc., etc., and his battery fails, his home burns down and he loses a family member or more, it's game over for electric vehicles in the US...again.
It's no secret that I have a rooting interest in electric cars. Roof top solar and electric cars are a great combination for those of us in NA hoping for energy independence without the massive Bunsen burner and ME/ISIS support.
And back to the point made in the article you posted. I don't think diesel is dead. Outside of Europe, it's never gotten off the ground so this problem is just another delay. Modern diesel works well and it has fans.
VW gave diesel a left to the jaw and it fell to the canvas but this is not the last round. I suspect diesel takes an 8 count and comes back swinging. We need high mileage cars. 50 MPG works for everyone. Over the next decade we'll sort out what fuels works well.

As for electric cars, I think Tesla should dispense with the charging stations. Mount a wind turbine on the car and charge the batteries slowly and continuously while in motion. Voila, no more worries about fires in the garage or every man's nightmare...not going the distance.

But you may be on to something. They sued the tobacco companies to get tax revenue. Now we have electronic cigarettes. Hemmm...

Re: DIESEL TO DIE in USA/China/JAPAN...........
The best solution for batteries is the flow batteries that separate the reagents except for a small quantity being used. This is likely the only safe solution for a high capacity electric vehicle.

Electric cars also seriously need to have their entire upper surface covered in solar panels. It's the only way you'll be able to get home from a camping trip.
I also disagree that diesel is dead.
