  • No es El Nino es El Hombre!

The current El Nino cycle is amazing as long as you're just an observer. Floods, tornados, etc., the usual when we have extra moisture in the atmosphere. But no one saw this coming: Two days ago the North Pole was above freezing. It's more pleasant at the North Pole than my house.

    Crazy weather. Almost no hurricanes:

    Less Tornados:

    Strange weather patterns:

Yeah, you guys are really having a winter, aren't you? I moved to NM in December of '82 during the biggest El Nino of the century, maybe the biggest one until now. We'd been driving all day, it was late and we were tired. We decided to stop in Roswell for the night and finish our journey north in the morning. The only place that was open so late was no-pets-allowed but we were only going to be there a few hours. They'd never know, right? During the night a giant snow and ice storm hit, just like the monster storm you guys got this week. You haven't lived until you've spent three days trapped in a cheap, Roswell motel turning away an ever more suspicious room service so they won't see your cat.

That whole winter was just awful.

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

We were in Eastern Kansas and checked into a motel that allowed pets, but had just installed new carpet. We found out that night that our dog had giardia. Fortunately we had a bunch of cleaning supplies in our car topper, so I spent the wee hours of the morning scrubbing the carpet (wife was pregnant, so she could not help). Those enzyme based cleaners really do work.

Unfortunately that night was just the beginning of a 3 day road trip. We arrived exhausted in North Carolina only to find that the truck driver who had agreed to meet us had arrived the day before and dumped all our stuff into a storage facility. It turns out that if they put the stuff in storage the warehouse gets dinged for any property damage instead of the driver.

[EDIT] Back to the topic: Our winter in Colorado has been pretty normal so far. We have snow on the ground on the front range and a decent snow-pack in the mountains. Weather has ranged from around 0F to 40F which is also normal for this time of year. Last year was pretty lame, we were way behind on snow until April-May and then caught up in one big storm.

Meanwhile up here it has been warm...warm like last year. A week or so ago it was snowing in Texas and 70 degrees on Cape Cod. I haven't broken out the winter coat yet. It's been grey and rainy, but balmy. Of course, last year something like this happened here until the last week of January. Then it snowed hard and fast about 10 feet in 6 weeks (literally).

At least the sea ice going into the season looks better on the surface this year.

DC, no winter coat? At 4 PM here is Raleigh. NC it's 38 degrees with snow starting in an hour. Low will be 22 tonight.

Re: No es El Nino es El Hombre!

It's 28 right now. Low will be 11 tonight. That's almost winter coat weather. But it's back in the mid-upper 40s by Wednesday and the 50s by this weekend. So I'll tough it out through a few flakes for a day in a sweatshirt. Sort of a New Englander pride thing.

                  DC,

I have a number of great friends in the Boston area and elsewhere in New England. They and you are a hardy bunch; 45 degrees is a heat wave!

Good luck to your Patriots; I like their team and organization. However, I'm pulling for my Redskins, the only thing in Washington people can agree on.
                  I also like the Panthers.

The Panthers are so much fun to watch this year. I don't care how much Cam Newton showboats. They deserve it if they win.

Im glad the Redskins managed to go on that late win streak too. The NFC East was looking grim before that. It'll be skins/packers for the first game, right? Should be a good game, with some momentum that should be do-able. But either way, Arizona's going to be tough. They're looking real good this year too. Not nearly as fun to watch as Carolina. But they're a damned tough team.

And no fans are happier today than Broncos fans - last Sunday was the best day since the '99 Super Bowl. Two weeks ago it wasn't clear they would get a playoff spot and now they've got the number one seed. I'm not sure if that translates to any playoff wins but we're so glad we don't have to go to Gillette.
