    The Volkswagen emissions scandal has “shattered” public trust in the car industry and caused motorists to question car safety standards, according to one of the MPs who will quiz the German company’s UK boss at a Parliamentary hearing on Monday.

    Will Quince, a member of the Transport Committee which will grill Paul Willis, VW’s British chief, said: “The public are asking: ‘If we can’t trust car companies on emissions can we trust them on safety?’

    “People put a huge amount of faith in regulators to protect them. The scandal has shattered trust and people are questioning what they can believe."

    VW has been engulfed by a crisis after it said as many as 11m cars worldwide have software installed which allows them to pass pollution checks.
    The revelation has driven down VW’s share price by 40pc and wiped £20bn off the company’s market value. However, it is yet to confirm if cars in countries other than the US are affected, after American regulators discovered “defeat devices” in 482,000 cars.
    “If a lot of people at a company are working on systems to work around particular tests it will make people ask, ‘If a company is willing to beat emissions tests, will they do it for other things, such as safety?’,” Conservative MP Mr Quince added.

    Fellow committee member Martin Vickers said MPs also want to know who in VW knew about the scandal – especially in light of claims by the car-maker’s US boss Michael Horn that the defeat devices were fitted by “a couple of software engineers who put this in for whatever reason”.
    “It is genuinely hard to believe this is the work of two IT guys,” Conservative Mr Vickers said. “The key thing we want to establish is when did management know and what evidence is there that this is a corporate deception?”
    Also appearing at the hearing – which could lead to a full inquiry – will be Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin, who has called for an EU-wide investigation into the use of defeat devices.
    Mike Hawes, chief executive of motor industry trade association SMMT, and Paul Higgs, chief executive of the Vehicle Certification Agency which checks emissions levels in British cars, will also give evidence.

    MPs on the Environmental Audit Committee are also due to question Mr Willis and Mr Hawes on Thursday.
    Nick Molden, the chief executive Emissions Analytics which tests cars’ emissions and fuel consumption, hit out at the relationship between the bodies which check vehicles and manufacturers.
    “The really interesting question for them to ask is how all the exceedances of emissions have been allowed to happen for so long,” Mr Molden said, adding that it had taken a scandal of the magnitude of VW to raise the issue.
    “The current system creates numbers which say that emissions are low and fuel economy is good: manufacturers like it, testers like to deliver good news and it gives the impression the government is doing something.
    “But it’s the public that is suffering because they have to inhale higher levels of pollution and their cars don’t perform as well as advertised.”

      I can see it now. Will Quince is riding his £1700 carbon fiber bicycle down a lane when an ancient VW transporter passes him using it's massive 1.6L engine and covers his yellow and purple spandex with soot. From that time forward he vows to rid the world of the evil menace that is VW and starts by bombing a 3rd world country.

        According to the Clean Air Taskforce, diesel exhaust is one of the country’s greatest sources of toxic pollutants and leads to 21,000 premature deaths each year, but even that won’t deter the coal rollers.

          Make NO Mistake "They" want diesel dead!
          Am delighted because the number of assh0les whom get 2 litre turbo-diesels & use the 250-300 flbs of torque to be a pain in the ass while overtaking...........now they end up with a 3/5 series......with a 3 pot 1500cc turbo gas engine that can't pull the skin off a rice pudding!

              Europeans are such pikers when it comes to cheating on car design. We were destroying the environmental and combining it with self immolation 50 years ago.

                I think the Pinto-flambé came a wee bit later. 50 years ago (exactly) it was Ralph and his book doin' it to the car biz:

                  Nice reminder but I'm afraid GM did it to themselves. Ralph was just happy to point out the obvious. I'm not sure this car had much worse over-steer than a Volkswagen of the same vintage during a hard turn. But Americans buying Corvairs thought they were sports cars and were used to front engine cars with understeer. Not a good combination.

                    I agree with your point. The name, Corvair, and many of the styling cues were deliberate plays to the Corvette at the time (including the paired headlamps and the iconic round taillights. So a "housewife's sports car" doesn't seem far fetched (wasn't the VW Karman Ghia of the same vintage a housewife's Ferrari?)

                    Chapter One in Nader's book was about the early swing-axle Corvair ('61-'64) propensity to oversteer. Most people assume the book was about that particular car or General Motors specifically. That is not correct. The book was an indictment of the entire American car industry, and political meddling in the industry at the government regulatory level, at the time.

                    Just as an aside, back in my hot rod days my Datsun 240Z gymkhana racer was fitted with a very highly adjustable front and rear suspension using components designed and manufactured by myself and my oldest brother, who is a master machinist. The various adjustments included the ability to set the static camber and toe-in on each corner independently, as well as the pre-load on the front and rear torsion anti-sway bars. Stock from the factory the 240Z suffered from an excess of understeer despite its Chapman strut independent rear suspension. When I set the car up for competition it was satisfying to have overcome that speed scrubbing tendency.

                      European Hot Hatches of the 80's tened to have lift off oversteer............My R5 GT Turbo had a touch but the REAL KILLER was the 205 GTI (1.6 & 1.9)........nasty SNAP oversteer, killed a friend of mine. Car mags LOVE oversteer (because they can get mad looking conering photo's to sell their crappy mags).

                      Both my Ford XR2 & RS1800 were totally safe on the limt, no nasty oversteer Thus 100% trustworthy......the 306 GTI-6 wasn't & even my Ford 140 is set up to oversteer (althought it does have an ESP system waiting in the wings).

                        My dad had a Corvair until that book came out. He traded it in for a '65 Pontiac GTO and traded in Mom's Hudson Jet for a '65 Pontiac LeMans. He special ordered seatbelts for both front and back seats for both cars and made sure we wore them... very unusual for that time.

                        Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
