John Boehner, House Speaker, Will Resign From Congress

WASHINGTON — Speaker John A. Boehner, under intense pressure from conservatives in his party, announced on Friday that he would resign one of the most powerful positions in government and give up his House seat at the end of October, as Congress moved to avert a government shutdown.

Boehner does an Emily Litella and says "nevermind." Maybe Father Guido Sarducci got to him after the Pope. He's guaranteed a gov shutdown in Dec. The wingers are going to have a field day.

Breaking: John Boehner has agreed to stay on as Speaker

      Per Bret
Having Talked to several senior aides on Capitol Hill (along with Chris Stirewalt and his sources on the Hill tied to the leadership) here is the picture that is beginning to form.
Speaker John Boehner has agreed to stay on as Speaker--not just until the Caucus nominates someone --but, until that person can confirm 218 votes on the House floor (needed to take the Speaker’s gavel). Short of that – Boehner will stay on for the rest of this Congress and steer legislation that is pending.
What does this mean? Moderates and leadership types are cheering and saying Boehner is the only one they will support. Conservatives will go ballistic since they know this signals that Boehner will make ALL kinds of deals to get big ticket legislation through the House even if it means using Democrats votes to do it.
The news… short of another candidate that can get 218 votes (and that looks like a long shot with leadership and moderates lining up behind Boehner)
Looks like he may be here to stay to handle the very tough debt ceiling and next CR.

        Re: Boehner resigns

WASHINGTON — Representative Kevin McCarthy on Thursday abruptly took himself out of the race to succeed John A. Boehner as House speaker, apparently undone by the same forces that drove Mr. Boehner to resign.

Mr. McCarthy announced his decision at a meeting of Republicans in the Capitol, and the gathering quickly became chaotic, with many members unable even to hear what was being said. Mr. Boehner requested unanimous consent to postpone the election — rather than immediately moving to vote on the remaining two candidates — and then announced, “the meeting is adjourned.”

The about-face appeared to stem from Mr. McCarthy’s growing realization over the last 24 hours that while many of his colleagues supported him, he was risking a humiliating defeat when the vote went to the House floor later this month. A group of about 40 hard-line conservatives announced Wednesday night that they would support Representative Daniel Webster of Florida, making it unclear whether Mr. McCarthy, who is from California, could assemble the 218 votes he would need to be elected.

Mr. McCarthy has been dogged over the last week with questions about his verbal competence, his conservative credentials and his ability to unify a group of members who may in fact defy unification. He said he intended to remain House majority leader, scrambling the races for all the Republican leadership positions. Many are attempting to move up in the ranks.

Mr. Boehner, who said last month that he would leave at the end of October after four years of endless badgering from the right flank of his conference, may need to decide whether to remain in the job until a new speaker is named or appoint an interim person to fill the job. “As I have said previously, I will serve as speaker until the House votes to elect a new speaker,” Mr. Boehner said in a statement Thursday.

What a train wreck! I'm embarrassed for my country. On the other hand... got any popcorn?
