The laggards will always be laggards no matter the schooling system. It's just that in one system they'll be idle and perform poorly while in another they'll be doing busywork while performing poorly. For all the hours Chinese students spend in school being instructed by martinets, the past century in China really hasn't been all that much to brag about. You'll find this in pretty much all of the Asian schooling systems. If you believe the statistics, they spend far more time in school and on studying than their counterparts in the west. And yet, for all of that effort and a purportedly superior schooling system, their standards of living are disappointing.

There's something to be said for being able to think critically. I find that exceptionally rare among people coming out of the Asian schooling system, not that it's common in the west (or at least the U.S.)

As they say, "Common sense is not so common." But it seems less rare here than there.
