Pacific Trade Pact Revives Ghosts of Nafta Jobs Fight
Big trade deals create jobs and boost wages. Big trade deals destroy jobs and drive down wages.
More than seven years in the making, the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact is heading to Congress soon, and the big debate has begun anew—among lawmakers, economists and presidential contenders—over the benefits or woes to come if the deal passes.
If nothing else, the brewing fight over TPP has awoken the ghosts of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the 1994 deal that opened trade between the U.S., Mexico and Canada after a prolonged spat—that has never really ended—over the agreement’s impact on the U.S. economy and labor market.
President Bill Clinton at the time made big promises of job gains, while presidential contender Ross Perot warned of a “giant sucking sound” that would devour nearly six million jobs.
