China has a need for natural resources to feed it economic growth. Yes, China has had problems with it's northwest area where the most Muslims reside. This is not to suggest China has any ulterior military motives in Afghanistan; it's likely they want to help develop this vast wealth and learn more how to deal with Muslim areas. China also has close ties to Iran which is a neighbor of Afghanistan.
Look at where the most oil and gas are and where the most Muslims are in China:
