Thankfully I didn't find one city in New Mexico in this list. Possibly the authors don't know we're a state. We still get a good laugh now and then when people have no idea that New Mexico is actual a state within the US. New Mexico magazine has had a feature for many years called "One of our 50 is missing". Here's one of the earlier submissions:

“Monday I took a friend in the brokerage business to dinner in New York at the Plaza Hotel, at its Trader Vic’s. When we were through, I attempted to pay with my American Express card. After some delay, it was returned and I was informed that the hotel accepted American Express only from within the U.S. boundaries.
“My attempts to refer to the treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo were rejected coldly and with disdain. After some negotiation and a threat to call the Mexican consul general in New York City, my credit card was finally accepted, but only after my broker friend guaranteed our bill. It seems to me our magnificent state should make a major effort to convince the people of the United States that we are (still?) a bona fide part of this country and that they can visit here to ski, to hunt or fish, or just relax without the need for shots or a passport.”

Many years ago when I lived in NM I went to Los Angeles on a business trip. Someone wrote me a check which I went to cash at his bank, BofA. I showed my NM driver's license to the teller, who refused to cash the check because I was a foreigner and didn't have a passport. After reading so many stories from "One of Our 50 is Missing" I couldn't believe it was actually happening to me.

I asked him if he knew where Arizona was. He did. I asked him if he knew where Texas was. He did. I said "that square state to the left of Texas and to the right of Arizona is NEW Mexico, not Mexico. It's one of the fifty United States. I'm a U.S. citizen."

No dice. He insisted that I was from Mexico. It would have been funny if he hadn't been so haughty.

I finally demanded to see the manager, who informed his teller that New Mexico was indeed a part of the United States. Then he cashed my check.

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
