It used to be you could order your own medicine, give your own shots and only call the vet when the animal really needed care (surgery, stitches etc.). Thanks to our overbearing government you can't care for your pet anymore you're forced to take it to a vet who has a lot of overhead, and now (also due to the government) is doing a lot less valued added work and a lot more low revenue BS, so they're less efficient as well as less profitable.

Have an 18-year old cat. She fell out of a tree 5 years ago and has a bad shoulder, but still races through the house making monster noises. After a recent cold snap she was favoring that shoulder like never before. Went to the vet w/o the cat and explained the situation. After a long consultation, she sold me some medicine for 6 dollars. Worked well.

my daughter was travelling and got sick in chiang mai, ended up having to go to a hospital e.r. saw a doctor and was given an antibiotic - total $20. i guess if she had been a cat, it would have been only $8.

My dog was on antibiotics for 3 weeks for a urinary tract infection. She went back to the vet for a urine culture to be sure the infection was gone. The test was $60. Her previous visit was around $400 (also had a yeast infection in the ears).

I am always a little surprised at what people pay for a dog these days. We always had either a mutt or a black Lab that might have cost my Dad $20. Today even "poor" people have to have a $1000 pure bred. We have a neighbor who goes through expensive dogs like poop thru a goose. One day it's here, next day its not. They would tie up a little Shih Tzu on their deck in the middle of July in Georgia and go on vacation for a week. Stuff like that. The authorities were called of course but they just claimed the sitter never showed or some other story like that. They must have had 12 pets in the last five years. Then they send their little kid over to borrow our vacuum. Seems theirs broke and they can't afford another right now. What???? Drove a new Lexus too lol.
