    It's hard for most American, to imagine what wars mean to local populations 10, 20, 50, 100 years later.
    With one exception, Thai, the Civil War in the South. The ACW being perhaps the first "modern war', in the sense it was total war, ending only with the complete destruction of the enemy population's ability to resist and not through a decisive single battle. Casualties were enormous on both sides but especially in the South. Civilian casualties and infrastructure destruction was nearly all there as well. The political economy of the South, of course, was transformed. These things were not forgotten.
