    Another old video tape, that shows there's nothing new under the sun

    René Lévesque's Parti Québécois, with its separatist election platform, did the same thing to the Canadian$ after winning the provincial election in 1976. The Canuck buck was over par with the US$ and started to fall almost steadily from that moment.

    The PQ separatist government wasn't the only reason for the currency's fall from grace, but it was the catalyst that started the reaction in the international markets. So far the PQ have lost two "independence" referendums (1980 and 1995). In the most recent
    Québéc Provincial election the PQ government lost heavily, falling to the lowest popular vote since its founding in 1970, and handing the opposition Liberals a majority government. What goes around, comes around.

        The scottish referendum is a perfect excuse for why inflation has not hit target, interest rates have not yet risen etc.

        Regardless of the vote result I can see this excuse being used whenever there is some unfavorable news to explain away.
