it makes perfect sense, as the whole point of western diplomacy was to prevent a shiite caliphate from iran - syria, and we accidentally bungled into preventing it for a while. now this admin is rectifying that... luckly they will probably bungle that too.

It is playing out along Vietnam lines lines isn't it? You'd think someone would respect the lessons of history. Nation building rarely works and is going to be even less effective in a made up country like Iraq.
