but the White House -- despite President Obama's own promises -- put pressure on the House to change the bill and significantly weaken it. Basically, the White House has now made it clear that for all its talk about respecting the constitution and civil liberties, when it comes time to actually show real leadership, it won't do it, and instead will back efforts that make a mockery of basic civil liberties.

I don't believe there is an electoral solution to our problems. In my opinion, we are not going to vote ourselves out of this.

Realistically, what are our options as this plays out?

1. Duck and cover. Try to prosper or at least don't go under in what looks to be a decade, maybe a generation or more of deteriorating economic and social conditions, with further erosion of personal liberty.

2. Social uprising. Only possible if social safety nets cease, the telly goes off and people stop taking their antidepressants. Probably not gonna happen. And if it does happen, God knows what we'd end up with.

3. Move to another country. Try to find a foreign bank still willing to set up an account for an American. Trade one set of problems for a new, different set of problems.

More and more I feel like I'm living in 1930's Berlin.

Its the Freedom "Act". I just wasn't sure of the genre at first, but now I can see that its going be classified as satire.
