Re: Daily Gym Visits Won't Erase Unhealthy Sitting

An old friend of the family was telling me how he remembers the Italian women regularly picking dandelions at the local church yard during the 1940s. Dandelions are a a delicacy for many and yet others spend hundreds of dollars on weed killer to eradicate them. http://www.thekitchn.com/10-ways-to-...-kitchn-188774

I bake a bunch in the oven at one night and then have a supply I can heat up in the microwave. I cut the warmed yam open and spoon on a tablespoon of almond butter. My lovely bride suggested this to me a while back and its become my favorite breakfast.

Better than ice cream - or almost as tasty as ice cream for me.

I have heard that coconut is edible. However I did not find the bark very palatable at all.

That's a lot like how it is. Dandelion fritters from the flowers are like delicious chicken nuggets. They are not bitter at all.

Now the other parts are, but....there are many tricks.

One is to cover a dandelion rosette with some sort of mulch. The plant will then create a larger crown to get to the light.

Its the white portion attached to the root. With the right method and plant they can become gulf ball sized.

          http://www.agry.purdue.edu/turf/weed...dandecrown.htm

The unexposed white crown is the mildest part of the plant. The only down side is the grit problem. However it also fits in with a process to make them even more mild. If the crown is shredded, it will float to the top and the grit will fall to the bottom in a pot of water. This will also leach out the bitter elements essentially diffusing into the water making even more mild that a child would eat it. Its reminiscent to brussel sprouts.

The leaves can also be treated this way or blanched as a pot herb. If you like cooked kale, you will like blanched spring leaves fitting into like recipes.

Of course one must not forget dandelion wine. I have 6 bottles left from last year.

I would fear dandelion in the wrong hands, that would indeed offend my palate as they would any one else. In the wrong hands at the wrong time, it would taste like lawn which goes so well with apple leaves.

Imagine not processing a cashew properly.....

This girl just set a world record for planking to raise money for a children's hospital. Her feat is all the more amazing because she was born with missing muscles in her legs and abdomen:

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Re: Daily Gym Visits Won't Erase Unhealthy Sitting

Oh I know its an input problem! Really just kidding. I'm not that fat nor do I really care that much either way. I just wanted to point out that perpetual motion won't fix it all. ( I also do 30 minutes 4 days week on an elliptical!) Many want to ignore basic body build and genetics and pretend looking like a fence rail is the only way to be healthy. Regardless of what they claim, its a vanity issue as much as a health issue. A lot of people live completely sedentary lives and eat tons of crap and still stay thin. Are they healthy? Some are and some are not. The real question is are they as healthy as they could be? The modern lifestyle is not well suited for optimal health regardless. Too much stress, lack of sleep, etc. There's a difference between longevity and health imo. Frankly I don't get the obsession of some with longevity. Why so fearful? I want to live an active and healthy life not just be propped up in a rest home being force fed Rx drugs to keep me going.

My kids are pretty competitive HS runners. In great shape, but they eat poorly at times. I try to tell them that one day that metabolism will slow and it will catch up to them. Or probably will.On the other hand, my uncle is a string bean who "retired" at 40 and basically just sits around on his ass all day doing nothing. He's 82. So so much for the activity theory.

Lek I was complaining of course!
