            Now wait just a minute.

The most senior iTulipers are content to publicly declare PCR insane. Assuming they are not trained in psychiatry, I'd say this was an ad hominem attack if I ever heard one. But I am the one scolded for engaging in ad hominems.

The most senior iTulipers have decreed that none of PCR's writings be posted in any discussion group. But I am the one censured for opposing free and diverse expression.

            WTF?

There is a big difference in saying that a commentator has been wrong virtually all the time and making the comment like this to a particular individual member here on itulip IMHO.

a public figure puts him/her-self out for public scrutiny. thus the libel and slander laws are different for public figures than for private individuals. i'm not sure who, if anyone, used the term "insane" for pcr, but as jimbergin points out, people sometimes notice when a public commentator keeps getting things wrong.

one of the important features of this community is that we try to treat one another with respect, even when we disagree. i think you went ad hominem with badjuju, and i think it was inappropriate to do so, and i think becoming defensive about it reflects badly on you. frankly, i'm disappointed in your defensive response because i've come to think of you as someone with whom i am often in agreement. i had hoped you would be gentleman enough, and mature enough, to own up to [what i consider] your inappropriate behavior. i still consider your put-down of badjuju totally inappropriate; again, your remark to badjuju reflects badly on you, not him.

                  I agree.

Although I'm not one of the "
most senior iTulipers" I've been on the receiving end of BadJuJu's ad hominems,
and the only person I clearly recall coming to my defence was
                  Woodsman.

You are correct, however I think Woodsman was referring to comments such as these:

and this: I think Woodsman is being disingenuous. The MAIN criticism is that PCR is consistently incorrect.

By "disingenuous" you mean liar, don't you Slim? Before you decided to call me a liar, did you first review the comments to see if your assertion is correct? Unless "crazy" has become a synonym of “incorrect” and I missed the memo.

Look at the record, Slim. Few bother to point out where PCR is wrong, and why bother if one can slander the man and get an attaboy for doing it.

Sorry if you are disappointed, but I think you are confusing me with someone else. BJ was a bully and like all bullies, fold when confronted. I spoke to him publicly and privately to ask that he cease with the insults and talk to the ideas. He decided to press on and I decided to take a stand against it. Then he decideded he wanted to play another game in another sandlot. If PCR is so "consistently wrong" then defeating his ideas should be simple. Only BJ never bothered to do it and it seems now most of us are okay with that approach.

Respect is a two way street, so please spare the sanctimony JK.

i think it's inappropriate for ANYONE here [or anywhere else, for that matter] to use ad hominem attacks instead of dealing with the issues under discussion. it lowers the tone of the discussion, if indeed any "discussion" remains when the interaction has become that degraded. i don't recall badjuju's remarks to/about you, raz, perhaps they were in threads i haven't followed. but if they occurred, i abhor them as well. and maybe woodsman came to your defence, and if so, i applaud that. but that doesn't justify woodsman's ad hominem attack on badjuju. [iirc, there's some saying like "two wrongs...."] i'd rather elevate the level of discussion here than have threads degenerate into flame wars.

i don't THINK i was being santimonious - it was not my intent to sound condescending, and i apologize for sounding like it. i'm not above screwing up, getting overly emotional, whatever, at times. i just try to catch myself and at a minimum change my behavior going forward, and when i really have my act together i can get myself to apologize. [my last edit was inserting the apology above, which took me a little more time to get to than my initial response.] in this instance, i don't care what bj did or said prior, or how despicably he might have behaved. i still say YOU can do better. and i bother to say that, or anything at all, out of respect for YOU. i have really valued many of your posts; i want to continue to think of you as someone i hold in high regard. maybe you don't care about that. so be it. but that was my aim, not sanctimony. if indeed bj has behaved badly in some way, you don't have to descend to the same level.
