    Re: Going Dark...............

Great thought...except I don't believe it's possible without pulling the plug on all computers...someone will have your old info, and be able to look it up. Then the CIA/NSA/FBI can go back to their old jobs of finding out where you went from there. Good old fashioned detective work, or something, for a change.

But it would be nice to have the privacy.

      Re: Going Dark...............

I have to say this with care..........as some of you know i am starting a new job very soon working for a goverment dept. To work in said deptment they did a backgound check.....which took 4 months.....& yesterday i got a letter saying "Well done, you passed.........i was shocked at how high my rating is & what i been ok-ed to read.........

If the industail-miltaly-complex want to read you they will, at VERY HIGH level...........they not the problem. The problem you face is some lower-level assh*le spying on you. We had a case in Liverpool of a nurse who was said to have killed her patients in the hospital.

Good looking (at the time) female the Police shut down her Facebook page, only to "by mistake" to switch back on, thus allowing their mates in the press to down load her photo's etc. The press had a field day!

All her personal data, they hacked her e-mails & found who her lovers were.....every possable detail was mined. It was going to run & run..........only it didn't. The patients that were drugged, were found to have been done so when:-

      A. She was on hoilday
      B. Done by overseas nursing staff, many of whom could NOT read or speak English !!!!!!!!!!!!

In short she had her live turned upside down in very short time by no fault of her own. I have already stated that i have ZERO intension to post ANY photo's of myself on line, & i will set up a Facebook page with FALSE photo's & details about me.

Why, well oneday i might get the finger pointed at me for something, may be i done it, may be not......but like HELL am i going to be tried by press! Also if they snatch your data/Photo's & then they catch up with you they going to look rather silly & their "credt" will be worthless....

Not just pulling the plug on your computers, but virtually stop interacting with anyone or any business that uses computers and internet-connected data storage.

For example, I don't like having private phone numbers on an smartphone which address book is synced to Google/Microsoft/Apple/insert other on-line service. However, I can't control what my friends do with their phone, so my personal details probably long have been harvested by said on-line services.

When social media started its rise, I noticed that plenty of people around me let these services harvest all their private emails for the sake of 'convencience' (e.g. find out who has a facebook account by providing facebook with your hotmail username and password).

We live in an era where data that formerly would have been classified as private, kept by individuals and businesses, is commoditized as a tradable good for which money is paid (although often no money changes hands, as in return for access to this data, a service is provided; for example, gmail.com for private e-mail accounts is a good example).

It's a very dangerous development, but other than pushing for very strict data privacy laws, there's not much you can do to stop it from happening to you, other than living as a hermit, outside the entire system.

Yuup! It's why I live in the rural mountains, and don't have an iphone, and keep my cell phone turned off, and refuse to use it except for real emergencies, and as a backup phone with paid hours in advance. Not that I'm going off the grid...I'm way too curious about what is happening. But I see no reason to participate much outside my small community, and limitedly there.

I almost went on Facebook when it first started, then looked at the information they wanted, and signed out leaving only my name. And I still get people want to 'friend me'!

Google is always asking for my passwords...why should a moments inconvenience lead me to hand over my identity to others?

I always thought I was the outgoing type in my youth, but I could never be so hare-brained as people have become, panting for their pictures everywhere, and a few minutes on some camera shown to someone they don't know, and don't want to know, while taking pictures of my groin to send to ladies seems literally insane.

Now that I've turned off the TV permanently, and only chat with the informed and enlightened, like on iTulip...I just don't have time for anymore bull****.

I sometimes wonder if the internet will get to be too much of an annoyance as well, but so far, the information available outweighs the cost and the irritation of seeing lies everywhere.

I liked the world a lot better with only fax machines, and a pager...that was quite sufficient to ruin your day.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer! They're onto you, Mega.
