Like Putin is actually going to fire/waste and ICBM on Ukraine.

You know when a ref breaks up a fight and one of the players gives him the middle finger as he walks off the field? It's kind of like that.

Putin's just showing the world he's still a big tough guy even though he's backing down. A few minutes in the penalty box and he'll calm down.

Which is of course routine on both sides.

Where is it that you see Russia backing down? It looks like game, set, match from where I'm standing. The Russians are large and in charge and have the forces in place to do whatever they decide is necessary for their purposes. That's certainly the case with Crimea and very likely so for the Ukraine east of the Dnieper. All of Ukraine is within their grasp and there's almost nothing the Ukrainians in the west can do to stop it except die with their boots on.

And sure as Sherlock, the US/EU do not have the stomach for a meaningful confrontation with Russia over Ukraine. The US might bluster, might cancel some meetings, maybe even create some sanction regime. It won't do a thing to change the reality on the ground, but at least gives Obama and Kerry a chance to posture. Most of all it comes at little cost. The proposed $1 billion aid package should tell you all you need to know. Hell, we spent $4 billion more destabilizing Ukraine through fronts like the National Endownment for Democracy and Freedom House.

The EU, on the other hand, has more to lose. A lot more.
As Russia rolls into Ukraine, are Europe's hands tied?
European leaders have been loudly critical of Russia's military intervention, but trade and energy realities limit the options available to respond.

"...But despite tough rhetoric, some experts say that ultimately there is very little that Europe can do, and that what might appear as caution might simply be a thorough understanding of how complicated the politics at their doorstep is. Europeans are expected to favor dialogue with – but not direct threats to – Moscow."

Ambassador Nuland told the EU what it can expect from the US on this, no?

ZeroCred comment threads are hilarious, but I digress...Do we know for a fact that Russia doesn't test ICBM missiles 3x a week and this is not merely a meaningless coincidence being hyped the government and media entities?

The US is pretty much useless here, and the EU is even less than useless.

However the Bond Vigilante's still have some teeth.

Putin maybe a great strategist but he's not a banker.
If he was, he would already own Ukraine

Russia was conducting a fair few tests of a new ICBM model over the last decade, with a considerable number of failures.

But only 1 test launch(6 months ago and a failure) of this model in the last 2 years, compared with 20 total launches over 20 years(2004-2013) that included 8 failures.

I reckon it's political posturing and "communication".

Silly and wasteful, but I guess governments are a reflection of us.
