That's what happens when you let Fiat design and build what used to be an American vehicle brand...it comes out looking like, well, like a mutt...

Not as cute as a real Fiat...

and not a real off-roader like an American Jeep should be...

Let's see, when was the last time there was any serious Jeep traffic in Italy...

This photo shows Fifth Army jeep vehicles crossing a rain swollen stream in the Volterra Sector, Italy, 9 July 1944. A few minutes before the rain, the stream was only a few inches deep.

Well, when your stated competition looks like a constipated Cheshire Cat, you're bound to come out with a turdster.

The times have sure changed, eh?

Shiny new age vehicles targeting the social media youth generation. That's a long way from owning a clapped out Datsun, a well worn VW Beetle or a Toyota Corroded as a first set of wheels...

Speaking of kids......this just showed up in our local newspaper:

              http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/9779...rn-off-driving

The article mentions overwhelming agreement that cost is an issue for why fewer kids are driving today......but then delves into other reasons for the change in behavior.

Looks like Fiat recycled the old Panda 4x4 design:

Interesting, this was an issue in our house when my step son refused to get his DL until it became a necessity for school/work when he was 22.

With the boy I felt part of it was that growing up he never lacked a ride. We would take him and his friends, or their parents would, everywhere he/they needed to go, he never sat at home on a Friday night disappointed because he couldn't get a ride somewhere.

But also he and his friends never seemed to be "into" cars the way my friends and I were. My 15 year old summer was spent working, saving and dreaming of the car I would get the following year. I was choosing between a Mustang, TR6 or 240z, those kind of choices weren't there for him, hard to excited or lay in bed dreaming about an Accord, Jetta, Legacy...

Ah but a Burnt Orange '72 240z that I gladly wasted the first real money I ever had on... even knowing what I know today, I would choose that car again over a smartphone, ipad... facebook, twitter... every time.

                    Re: The new Jeep "Turdster"

I am going to buy a Wrangler soon as I can't put off my midlife crisis anymore and I'm afraid they will continue the trend of neutering them. Worst mistake of my life was selling my 98 TJ "just in case" my business tanked during the recession. It didn't and now I can't find a decent used TJ for under $15,000! Amazing resale values.

That turd Jeep will probably sell like hotcakes but I can't for the life of me understand what people see in those "cute utes". Stand back and look at them. A Civic has more room. If you can't drop the top and drive in the woods then why settle for a cargo area the size of a briefcase? To each his own I suppose.

A good friend of mine's prized possession is his Orange '72 240z!

Times sure have changed. All I thought about as a teenager was buying my first car and the independence driving gave me. My 16 year old twins had to be really pushed into driving in order to get the practice they need to get their license. My son wants a car but hasn't shown a lot of zeal in figuring out how he will pay for it! I don't remember it being such a struggle. Mine are still not ready to drive. Kids today seem to be lacking in hand-eye coordination, the ability to judge distances, and the mental focus to drive. At least a lot do. Perhaps all the staring at their phones all day plays a role. My kids rarely rode bikes like we did. The cost is a factor, but I'm not sure its the major one. They can connect with friends via social media and so don't need to drive as much in order to socialize. They all have their own private phone lines whereas we had to share a line with the whole family. Plus, my kids are a lot busier than I was. Sports, Academics, clubs, all take more time. They drown in homework. They are forced somewhat to choose between academics and working a job to pay for a car. Plus decent jobs for teens are a rarity. I live in an affluent area and the kids seem to expect a car. Mine may be waiting a long time if they think one will just show up.

My theory is that Italy has much narrower roads and thus the cute ute Jeep is the only way they can aspire to be "American" without emigrating. Who knows, Sergio Marchionne might have a European winner on his hands ;-)

In the meantime, back in the U.S. of eh, I don't expect the Ford F150 4x4 to be displaced any time soon...
