In the old daze, before ZIRP, I would latter out our cash in CDs of varying lengths.
My question on 10-year treasuries is: how can I buy 10-year treasures that are halfway or more towards maturity, in effect lattering them out?
One answer from a friend:
you must have a bank that will buy existing treasuries for you! Stock brokers will not handle them nor will the majority of banks. One must use a bank where you have most of your accounts -even here you must talk to senior management only!--They can do it for you BUT most will not--they prefer to have the investment guy in the lobby get you into a mutual fund of some kind. I was able to have our "private banking" dept arrange it for us only because we have our trust, etc. with them. My arrangement is to buy and sell through a special dept. of our bank at a minimum fee for both buying and selling.
If you are interested in buying new treasuries then use Treasury direct. They now will allow you to purchase new issues ,but, only by using the internet . I believe they are trying to eliminate all of the little buyers from the market!.. Even with T-direct you must transfer the treasuries to a bank or brokerage firm (try to do this one!) and then after the transfer is made you can have the bank sell it for you. You cannot sell thru T-direct. It is a real pain but if you can get through to top management of a bank or wealth management people you should have no problem.
Once you find some institution to work with you then I'll help you on the next step which is determining which treasuries to buy!. 1st step is most important!--GOOD LUCK!
