You got that right. Worse here in about 20 years. We had a similar cold snap in about 1993 I believe -- but this one if I recall has gone on for far longer.

Re: Uh Oh! The Sun's Asleep! COLD!

Reporting from Chicago, This has been the coldest winter I can remember. I believe that this is the 3rd coldest and about 3rd snowiest winter ever. There was a colder winter in 77 that I can remember but I was in school then. I just had to bundle up and walk to class. I did not have to shovel my drive 3 times a week, or commute an hour to get to work. I think the cover of national geographic that year says here comes a mini-ice age. Today is March 1, the temperature here is forecast to got to 5 tonight. The last two days morning temps have been below 0.
It is snowing again as I type. The next three days have forecasted lows in the single digits.

I realize that the cold could be concentrated in the eastern half of the U.S. Does anyone have any idea of mean global temp from an "unbiased" source. I know
the west coast has been hot and dry.

Not all of the west coast has been hot and dry this winter.
And where I live, just east of the Continental Divide (and a loooong way from "the east") it snowed all day yesterday and we woke to minus 34 C (-29F) this morning...

          Active for next 15 hours
          Locations: Metro Vancouver; Fraser Valley
Posted 57 minutes ago – Environment Canada
Snow tonight and Sunday with accumulations of 10 to 25 cm.

This is a warning that significant snowfall is expected or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..listen for updated statements.

A strong Arctic ridge of high pressure is situated over the British Columbia Interior. Cold Arctic air is being pushed out to the coast causing very strong northeasterly winds of 90 km/h through the mainland inlets of the central and north coasts. The combination of strong winds and cold temperatures will result in cold wind chill values of below minus 20 tonight and Sunday for inland sections of the North Coast. Strong outflow winds over southern sections of Howe Sound has abated and will continue to ease through tonight.

Meanwhile, a low pressure system developing off Vancouver Island will spread increasing amounts of moisture across the South Coast. 5 cm of snow is expected over the Lower Mainland and East Vancouver Island tonight with local amounts up to 10 cm over the Fraser Valley. Snow will then intensify on Sunday before changing to rain later in the day. Further accumulations of 5 to 15 cm are expected with the greater amounts occurring inland and at higher elevations of Metro Vancouver. There is also the risk of freezing rain Sunday night over eastern sections of the Fraser Valley.

You are correct. Third coldest and third snowiest, so far. My son is at U Chicago law school so I follow it.
Record cold and snow all over North America. (Lot of references to records all over the world at this site, but the theory predicts North America to be hit especially hard, as it has been so far.)

Never mind the fact that peakishmael posted a response showing that it is still one of the hottest Januaries recorded...

Yeah, I'm really hoping climate change hits humanity hard and they cry over how stupid they were to ignore it. Silly apes deserve every bit of the misery they'll get.

Been a while since I studied the theory, but I believe South America is also affected. Pretty sure there have been references to more snow and cold during their winter last summer as well as some references to poor growing weather recently (although can't find link for that at moment). I recall that North America is supposed to be directly in the cross-hairs of the encroaching cold, however, with the upper Midwest particularly vulnerable - which seems to be playing out with the great lakes nearly completely freezing over. http://iceagenow.info has info about record cold all over North America and globally (Slovenia, Iran, India, among others, have been affected this winter).

Also it has been a warm winter in Europe, especially in Scandinavia, etc.

                      Not in North America...
Good thing there's more to the world than North America.

The month of December was one of the mildest in a century in the Nordic countries, according to meteorologists, with temperatures exceeding their normal seasonal average by four to five degrees Celsius in Norway and Finland.

"The link between the cold in North America and the mild temperatures here can be traced to a low pressure area that gave North America cold winds from the north, but which sent warmer winds from the southwest this way," said Reidun Gangstoe, a researcher at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

North America is a very small part of the globe. 4.8% of the world's total surface.

Seriously, you are prepared to argue that a major climate shift to a much colder North America would not have major global ramifications?
