  • Walmart holds Food Drive for its Own Employees

Is Walmart's request of associates to help provide Thanksgiving dinner for co-workers proof of low wages?

Apparently, it's OK with Walmart that their own employees cannot afford to buy food for Thanksgiving.

This, from the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper:

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The storage containers are attractively displayed at the Walmart on Atlantic Boulevard in Canton. The bins are lined up in alternating colors of purple and orange. Some sit on tables covered with golden yellow tablecloths. Others peer out from under the tables.
This isn't a merchandise display. It's a food drive - not for the community, but for needy workers.
"Please Donate Food Items Here, so Associates in Need Can Enjoy Thanksgiving Dinner," read signs affixed to the tablecloths.
The food drive tables are tucked away in an employees-only area.

Sounds like a retail variation on the Company Store . . .

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

Many Walmart employees make minimum wage or a bit more. If they have no other source of income they certainly could some help. However, there are many people working (or not working) elsewhere in the same boat. This does not make Walmart evil. If they could find a higher paying job they most likely would.

Many Walmart employees are eligible for food stamps. This amounts to a public subsidy for the largest retail corporation in the world. (think there's a connection ) Evil? Applying concepts of morality to a giant corporation, or a nation state, is a dead end. They do what they think they must do to protect and strengthen their own interests. Other groups need to do more of the same . . . .

Walmart is a scam on the American taxpayer. Not only are a majority of Walmart workers on food stamps, a huge percentage of food stamp dollars are spent at Walmart.

            Now that's a virtuous circle!

Since 1 in 6 US citizens are on food stamps and walmart is the largest us grocery chain by far I expect you may be right. However, except for Aldis, it has the best prices by far so I am glad that Walmart is where they shop. We also shop there often and we often shop at Aldis too.

The scam is the American educational experience that the teacher's union have given to low income students that doesn't prepare them for any good jobs, and WalMart takes entry level employees as does a lot of retail and fast food employers.

Walmart provides one of the few cheap resources for food, household necessities, and inexpensive generic drugs for poor families.

Maybe only one member of the worker's family has a job; the other losing it in this jobless recovery. Of course the elite governing class is paid far more than private employees, plus they are insulated from job cuts for the most case.

Perhaps you want the poor to get their coffee at Starbucks and food at Harris and Teeter?

Walmart doesn’t have to pay higher wages and or charge higher price because the US taxpayer is picking up part of the tab. The employees at one Florida Walmart collect more than 1 million from the federal government in the form of food stamps, etc.

The total subsidy by taxpayers nationwide is in the billions. So next time you buy those 15 dollars jeans, add on 2 bucks that go from you and from all the other people who don’t even shop there. It similar to L.A. cable subscribers getting a bill increase to support the Dodgers whether they watch baseball or not.

Thailandnotes, I am not trying to be mean, but isn't one of the reasons you live where you do is because of the lower cost? Walmart's competitors also benefit from government subsidies. They simply aren't as large and well run so their prices can't compete (except for AlDIs). This is not new, Walmart always had the lowest prices far before our current situation.

Some threads are amusing beyond belief.

Okay folks, let's imagine we have the power to instantly wipe that dastardly, terrible, exploiter-of-human-beings employer and taxpayer leech named WalMart off the face of the earth.

Who benefits? The (former) employees? The (former) customers? The (former) shareholders? The taxpayers?

                        Who??

Why don't we just do a Krugman and raise the minimum wage to $100,000 a year...

Are you arguing that the exploitation of 1 million fellow Americans is OK or are you arguing that Walmart does not exploit their workers? Or, are you saying it is OK because their labor practices are subsidized using my taxes?

That is it in a nutshell. Walmart is by no means the only corporation receiving this subsidy but probably one of the largest and certainly one not afraid to put its money behind keeping that way.
