How much of a bite can they take from the populace deliberately, and ostentatiously, and still avoid pitchforks, presuming that the 49% that are not the Elite or the Have-nots do the pitchforking?

The state can expropriate it all. And there have been plenty of examples in history when that is exactly what has happened.

And then it can take your life. And there are plenty of examples of that too...

"Pomperipossa in Monismania" (also called Pomperipossa in the World Of Money) is a satirical story written by the Swedish children's book author Astrid Lindgren in response to the 102% marginal tax rate that she incurred in 1976. It was published starting on 3 March 1976 in the Stockholm evening tabloid Expressen and created a major debate about the Swedish tax system.

The marginal tax rate above 100%, dubbed the 'Pomperipossa effect', was due to tax legislation that required self-employed individuals to pay both regular income tax and employer's fees.

The story, a satirical allegory about a writer of children's books in a distant country, led to a stormy tax debate and is often attributed as a decisive factor in the defeat of the Swedish Social Democratic Party, for the first time in 40 years, in the elections later the same year. She, however, continued to support the party for all her life.

        Pomperipossa in Monismania.

        . . .

PS. Just before the deadline for publication Pomperipossa received a more exact calculation from the wise men’s department of revenue, that clearly explained that she would not get any 5 000 kronor to squander in riotous living. No, they said, if you make two million, our part is, hallelujah: Kronor 2 002 000 kronor. Then Pomperipossa decided to go out on the highways and byways to beg for enough money to buy an ever so small crowbar. Shake in your boots, wise men, she thought, increase the nightly security around your treasure chests! 5 000 I must have one way or another! If you can steal without scruples, so can I!

Those who are planning to do the same thing in the USA are avidly watching the European experiment to find out. In the meantime, DHS keeps buying more bullets and riot gear, the IRS has armed itself, the NSA listens to everything we say, whistleblowers are persecuted, and those who are deemed a threat to the establishment for any reason can be labeled "terrorists" and hauled away without trial or due process.

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Understood...but what about pitchforks? Will the entire world lie down and allow themselves to be stripped...or is it because it is only 10% that they think people will just grumble, and let it go?

I think they're hoping that people will just grumble and let it go. Remember, 1 in 10 Americans take anti-depressants. Among women between the ages of 40-50, it's 1 in 4.

Millions of people are chained to their home mortgages. They're too afraid to fight back. Arrest and job loss will mean the loss of their home. For anyone still considering the pitchfork alternative, the Patriot Act, NDAA and NSA are already in place.

As long as they can keep people fighting amongst themselves and hating each other, they'll be safe from pitchforks. That's what all the polarizing social issues and political theater are for. It's not the fault of the FIRE Oligarchs that the government is broke and needs to take our money. It's the fault of those damned Republicans/Democrats/Welfare Cheats/"insert group to blame here". But if it gets too hot for them, they have their escape already planned.

Yes. Mortgages, fear, depression, polarizing social issues & the distraction of who to blame. I would add the distraction of TV and the internet in general. I think that a lot of people will keep letting it go as long as they can watch TV and/or surf the internet. Yes, there's "subversive" political talk on the internet, but most will be playing Farmville or something.

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing the song of angry men?
It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again.
When the beating of your heart echoes the beating of the drums,
there is a life about to start when tomorrow comes.

Will you join in our crusade? Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond the barricade, is there a world you long to see?
Then join in the fight that will give you the right to be free.

Some will fall and some will live
Will you stand up and take your chance?
The blood of the martyrs will water the meadows of France
