Around 1986, it was unbelievably cold around New York, and a pipe in a wall burst near my face. That was not fun at all.
I completely misunderstood how pipes burst. I thought an ice plug forms, and the ice plug exerts pressure on the pipe, and that is where the pipe bursts. But that is not how it happens.

I use a B&D thermal leak detector to find cold spots. Extremely useful for all kinds of things.
