  • How frozen pipes burst

Winter is coming and with it risk of burst pipes.
Around 1986, it was unbelievably cold around New York, and a pipe in a wall burst near my face. That was not fun at all.

I completely misunderstood how pipes burst. I thought an ice plug forms, and the ice plug exerts pressure on the pipe, and that is where the pipe bursts. But that is not how it happens.

    Here is an excellent demo.

I use a B&D thermal leak detector to find cold spots. Extremely useful for all kinds of things.

When a threatening freeze is forecast let the water run, as little as possible. An easy preventative.
