Re: Russia offers America a way out
Fortunately dogfights are turning contests, not climbing contests.
In his 1986 autobiography Chuck Yeagar wrote about flying an F86 against the MiG15 and vice versa. In both cases he beat his mock dogfight opponent one-on-one and concluded that the airplanes were a draw...it was the skill of the pilots that differentiated the outcomes. Difficult to argue coming from someone who became an "ace" (5 confirmed kills) in one day, and shot down a German Messerschmitt ME262 jet with his propeller driven North American P51 Mustang (okay, Mega, his P51 Glamorous Glen III did have a Packard built Rolls Royce engine in it).
IIRC, it was during the Korean War that the USA created the first fighter weapons (e.g. top gun) school.
Just for Mega's consumption...we colonials here in the frozen white North are responsible for creating the fastest F86 Sabrejets ever built. Canadair built them under licence from North American Aviation and starting with the Mk3 version Canadair replaced the 5200 lbf General Electric J47 engine with a Canadian designed and built 6000 lbf Orenda 3. In May 1953 Jacqueline Cochrane set a new all time aircraft speed record at Edwards Air Force Base flying a Canadair built F86 Mk 3, and also went on to become the first woman to fly faster than the speed of sound in that same airplane.
Not content with that, Canadair and Orenda went on to produce the Mk 5 with 6500 lbf Orenda 10 and the Mk 6 version with a 7440 lbf Orenda 14. Just because it's winter 9 months of the year up here doesn't mean one has to stick to dog sled speeds...
