I'm afraid one day we will look back at college loans as one of the worst scams ever. Its one thing to rip off adults on mortgages, another to rip off the young and naive, for what to many is an education not worth two nickels. All the easy credit has done is to allow colleges to jack up already overpriced educations. And of course the banks get their cut. The confusing morass of college "aid" gives the schools a shot at the US taxpayer as well. Mortgages, Medical, and Matriculation, the three horsemen of the financial apocalypse.Comment

The shortfall has driven some Philadelphia school administrators to desperate ends. Daniel Lazar, principal of Greenfield Elementary School in central Philadelphia, sent a letter to parents last week asking for a $613-per-student donation to fill a $355,000 budget gap at his school.
