nears i remember it all - IIRC 1st time i knew of ole marshall, was from Wired, circa 1993or4....

this was memorable: "... B.C. never had a 20th century..."

I would note that I know people who live in the non-tourist areas of Honolulu - both long time and recent arrival. The area of Hawaii where the NSA/Navy center is, is nothing like the tourist areas. The cost of living is also pretty high.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the difference between the $200K vs. the $122K was due to COLA adjustments (tax free) plus various benefits like a car allowance, etc.

When I lived in Japan as an ex-pat - my official salary was more than doubled (as reported to the IRS) due to COLA and various benefits.

Snowden addressed this quite some time back during a Q&A at the Guardian.

I was debriefed by Glenn and his peers over a number of days, and not all of those conversations were recorded. The statement I made about earnings was that $200,000 was my “career high” salary. I had to take pay cuts in the course of pursuing specific work. Booz was not the most I’ve been paid.
