Re: Freedom In The 50 States
interesting that NH has declined in the rankings = more MA residents and other bluestaters (dems) moving north.
By the end of 2010, New Hampshire was no longer the freest state in the nation. The 2009—10 legislature hiked numerous taxes and fees and used one-time stimulus dollars and new debt to fund a significant increase in government spending.
(and guess who was in charge???)
In FY 2010, the state and local tax burden was 8.0 percent of personal income, seventh lowest in the country, compared to an FY 2000 figure of 7.5 percent, then lowest in the United States. State and local government consumption and subsidies stood at 9.0 percent of income in 2010, compared to 7.3 percent in 2000. Debt was at 18.8 percent of income, compared to 16.7 percent a decade earlier. While New Hampshire still scores sixth in the United States on fiscal policy, the famed “New Hampshire advantage”¯ has dissipated
the bluest of the blue states...
wonder how many of their residents have scraped off their bumper stickers from 2008...

Koch defined freedom is Conservative by nature, although the specific Koch brand of conservatism isn't my favorite flavor of it.
For instance, if states have campaign finance laws preventing people like Chuck and Dave Koch from spending all the out-of-state money they want on local political races across the country, they get rated as having "less freedom."
But if "freedom" means more dirty money in politics, then you can keep your damned "freedom."
So all I'm saying is that the red states won because the Kochs defined freedom to make sure the red states won.
Even still, I think there are plenty of Conservatives out there who don't agree with the Koch family's agenda, and who don't think unlimited corporate money in elections - especially out of state money in local elections - is a good thing like they do.
If you want a more balanced, non-partisan look at 50-state "economic freedom" issues, then take a look at this working paper.

If I had my way, out-of-state individuals wouldn't be allowed to donate either. There's just something off-putting about folks from far away dipping into our local politics.
