Price was a liberal Jewish attorney from New York who embraced organized labor. According to Ralph Nader, who met him during Nader’s 1996 presidential run, Price often told a joke about meeting some discount retail executives who reverentially told him, “Sol, you are the father of everything we have inherited.” To which Price replied: “I really wish I had worn a condom.”

Good article. I didn't know they were different from Walmart or Target.

Costco is a model for how we would like more companies to be.

Can't help but wonder if Costco will go the way of Walmart and Home Depot once the founder is out of the way.

It takes faith in humanity to hold the view that over the long term, doing right by everyone involved can be profitable. Costco's leadership is the opposite of the normal American corporate sociopathology.

I follow Costco's philosophy in my business but I'm still waiting for the big payoff!

Costco in Japan continuing to expand. Prices for many things jumped 20% after the yen declined against the dollar, but it is still a bargain and worth a trip every couple of months. The great thing here is that you can send a box up to about 60 pounds anywhere in Japan for about $10. You don't need a car. Go by bus or train and have everything heavy sent, delivery in 1 to 2 days anywhere in Japan. You can specify day and time of delivery. When you have a big party, just go and pick up party food and bring it home.

Mexican Costco used to make an outstanding cake, but no more. We've switched to a different bakery (so far not Bimbo owned) The apple and tuna pies still are quite good.

We like that we have our local costco within walking distance from home. Beats Walmart in that sense. Also has several things of better quality and cheaper.
